Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 4 days old and smaller than others

HI - we had our first litter at the weekend - 4 girls and 2 boys - everyone nice and safe. I've been tracking the weight and one pup - who was smallest when he was born - has only increased his weight by 30% of his birth - all the others have increased by 40% - this was day 4 weigh-in. Little Sandy was born at 174g and is now 227g (the next smallest is 268g today so there is a gap showing itself) He is eating with all the others and is active and affectionate.

Have I got a problem developing or is he just a small fellow?

With thanks

Don't panic ;-) If he is eating and putting on weight then he is doing ok. Just keep weighing them. You may find out that he is the biggest when they are fully grown :-)

Thank you for the reassurance -  He is sucking as I write - and he is gaining weight so I'll just keep an eye on him.  He's a cute chap.  :) Jt

I have a litter of 10 here just now  ;-) They are nearly 4 weeks old and I have a couple of bruisers :-) and a couple of smaller ones. They are all fit, healthy, putting on weight and playing. I try to make sure that the little ones are fed first if possible. It's easier now they are being weaned but I still put them to mum first after they have eaten solids.
