Hi. my bitch seems to have itches on different parts of her body at times. She can be asleep and wakes up to " scratch " her feet with her teeth or sometimes other places on her. If she did it just through waking times I would have wondered if it was boredom as she is an energetic dog, but she is stimulated with toys, walks etc.  She hasn't got fleas or mites as I have bathed her in Seleen and have checked her over for fleas. I haven't changed her food or used different washing powder on her bedding, and nothing changed in the house cleaning. I am at a loss as to what could be making her itch, I did wonder about a yeast infection, which my daughters pug has had, and since asking for advice for her from the forum, was advised to get Maleseb which cured her. Is it correct you can only get it from the vet, and most importantly is it safe to use on pregnant bitches? the problem started before pregnancy, so we can rule that out also. She dosent chew herself to damage the skin or anything, any ideas please?

Malaseb can be too strong for some skin conditions, certainly was for my dog and he became very distressed after it was used. I now use Sebolytic which is far more gentle and soothing. You need the vet to check your dogs skin to see what the condition is. If its sore where it's been scratched than Malaseb could make it more uncomfortable.

As arched, I'm not a fan of Malaseb. Found it very harsh, dried the skin, stripping coat of oils, itchy inflammed areas became tomato red & scratching increased remember reading on the net sometime ago that it should be used wearing gloves.

Rule out other parasite infestation ie Cheyletiella

This creature is often present under the skin cells showing no symptoms until times of stress ie pregnancy and nursing.

Hi, If there had been a parasite infection the Seleen would have killed off any mites, so that is not the problem, if she had cheyetiella then I would have known as I get the mites biting me. Any other ideas please?

Environmental/Seasonal Allergies?  Atopic Dermatitis.  How old is she?  Google up and you will find onset is typically at age one to three years.  Tends to worsen with age.

My boy started the itchies at age 2.  He has seasonal allergies to pollens, grasses etc.  Not food because he doesn't  itch in winter.  Thank Heavens for a cold winter climate.

First year was a short itchy season and an over the counter human anti-histamine, Reactine brand name here, worked fine.

Year 2 season was longer and needed Reactine with Vanactyl P.  The P stands for Prednisone.

Year 3 (age 4) started early in April, looked like this was going to be lifelong so Vet suggested Atopica, which is a lesser evil than Prednisone.

Year 4, this year, age 5.  Spring was cool and I found a shampoo that helps a lot but we did eventually have to start up the Atopica again but not till late May this year.  I also supplement his diet with EFA (which help his dry, harsh coat) and have just started a combo Quercitin/Bromelain which is a natural anti-histamine.

Other people have just gone straight to their Dermatology Vet but some have gone the route of expensive testing requiring blood draws and/or skin scrapings and test injections and ended up on Atopica anyway.  My Vet is a certified Homeopathic Vet, one of the few, but even he suggests not going that route, or the allergy testing route.  The reason he says not is while you are trying out one potential remedy you cannot use anything else to help the dog, so he is scratching like the devil, in misery, till you find something that works.  And you may not find something.
