Topic Dog Boards / Health / sudden death for the 2nd time in a year :(
- By MandyC [gb] Date 24.06.13 20:15 UTC
Cant believe I am posting in here again. Saturday morning I got up to find my gorgeous ddb Harry had died in his sleep, he was only 5. The shock and devastation is something I can not put into words. To make this worse some of you may remember that i experienced exactly the same thing last year, same breed same sex same age......I went to put Harry out for his morning wee and he was laid like he was asleep, when I bent down to say 'come on H' and put my arms round him and realised why he hadnt got up it felt like my heart was going to stop too.......he was such an amazing boy.....to go through this with one boy was hard enough but to do it all over again on Saturday morning has just destroyed me :-(

He had been losing weight over the previous weeks and just 3 weeks ago had full bloods, all normal and heart checked which sounded normal (I know that doesn't mean it wasn't)
My thoughts are that it was indeed his heart as besides the weight loss he had no signs of being unwell, no vomiting, no diahrea nothing, still happy and still playing. Why is life so very cruel.

Sleep well my Handsome Harry I love and miss you soooooo very much xxx

Mandy so very sorry, you must be so heartbroken,

I know this is the wrong time as you will be so cut up right now but for both to go like this so young this is terrible, did they come from the same breeder by any chance, have you let the breeder know? Will you do an autopsy? I think I would need to know anything from slow poisoning to all the other ailments that can cause this, I would just need to know.

So very sorry, the shock of this is awful.............. RIP Harry.

both boys were from different breeders and were totally unrelated bloodlines.
No autopsy....no way :(  I took Harry to the crematorium myself and will have him back at the end of the week.

Sadly this happens all too often is this magnificent breed and males of around 5 seems to be the most common.......hence no more boys for me I cant do this again, totally devastated x

Gosh, I thought the average lifespan for a DDB was 10 years? Has the lifespan really changed so much? So tragic.

I understand why you wouldn't want an autopsy if it is becoming the norm for some males in the breed.  No you can't go through it again, far too much heartbreak, once again so sorry, he looked a wonderful boy. xx

Awful. :( Don't blame you for not wanting to risk it again. Why is it happening though? Is it sudden heart failure or something? Sounds like the breed has a big problem that needs to be addressed.

What a terrible shock for you. :-( It sounds as though he went peacefully which might be a small crumb of comfort in time.

It seems that Dilated Cardiomyopathy is a problem that can cause sudden death in the breed; his breeder will certainly need to know.

Sleep well, Harry.
