Thanks for replying.
My partner has been thinking about getting a a new breed and this is one of the possibles. She would probably want show it but that is only about 1% of the time we spend with the dog so I am more interested how they are to live with. Are they good with other dogs, good on or off the lead, noisy? All those sorts of things.
The reason I ask is when I read about my breed a lots of the stuff written is misleading or simply wrong - so it occurred to me that might well be the case for other breeds.

What about a Eurasier which combines both the Chow and the Spitz (albeit the Wolfspitz rather than the littlies, and of course Samoyeds).

The G. Spitz are inclined to be noisy (but then that is a training issue).

Almost opposite demeanour, one gushing the other aloof, then of course huge size, and therefore grooming commitment difference.

Have found eurasiers to be a bit of a mixed bag - I must stress this is just the ones I have met - met about 20 or so from various lines.
Grooming, although a consideration, is not really an issue - just one more dog to add to the current "groomed gang" :-)
I prefer aloof so your point about the GS is very useful - although it would spend more time with my partner than me so she may have other ideas!
More research I feel - will try and get to Windsor this weekend.

Worth looking at the other well established (old breeds) non sled dog Spitz. 

Our breed (Norwegian Elkhounds) desperately needs new exhibitors, then there are the Keeshonds, similar low numbers, and the biggest of the German Spitz type.

Then you have the herding group with Norwegian Buhunds (ditto comments re Elks and Kees re new serious owner blood needed), Finnish Lapphunds are an up and coming breed that have really taken off. 

Then of course you have the Smiley Samoyeds.

Finnish Spitz have very low numbers, may be a bit too sensitive, fizzy and gobby for many (including me).

Then Asiatic Spitz you have the Shiba Inu, and japanese Spitz, (probably not really Japanese in origin) I assume both the Akita breeds are too big, if your aiming between German Spitz and Chows for size.

Lots of variables to consider, I like a lot of the breeds you mention - although not all. Finnish Lapphunds and Samoyeds are particular favourites of mine.
I also like the Finnish Spitz but am alone in that (in our house anyway) and have to say, that recently, when I tried to talk to the Buhund people I was not over impressed with their attitude - perhaps I caught them on a bad day - judging was over so who knows?
You are right about the Akitas, Louise is looking for something smaller - she already has 4 Akitas. :-)

Well if you can get to East of England on 6th July we actually have a decentish entry of 30 there  on the 6th with 6 puppies that I know of making their debut, major reason to celebrate (with some brand new exhibitors too) when poor Peni had been the only puppy at some shows.

Only 14 entered at Windsor, probably always being Friday, the parking fee, high entry fees, not very exhibitor friendly layout, and close to a nicer show a week later, with a breeder judge meaning dogs bred by her won't be entered.  I'm annoyed as my Inka is entered, but is in season, so even fewer will be there.  It's very frowned on in our breed to shwo in season bitches, good way to loose any friends owning males.

Advantage with ours is they have a coat, but a wash and wear not major grooming kind of coat.
