Seen today on a well known Pets 4 sale site - £800

"Very rare and unusual litter of white cavalier king charles spaniel puppies. Very well socialised and have the most wonderful temperaments. Both parents can be seen. Unusual colour gene, with piercing blue eyes. First in 20 years of breeding. Vet checked with 4 weeks pet plan insurance. Call for further details"

White with blue eyes? Oh dear God. Any suggestion of BAER? Silly me. :-(

Just for those seeing this on search engines BAER is a hearing test to check for deafness in puppies and babies.

White coat colour and blue eyes in dogs is often linked to deafness.

Just seen the ad.

No mention of health tests - Heart, Syringomyelia, etc :(

Don't know if it's me but for such a pretty breed, those pups look ugly :(    Wouldn't have thought colour could make such a difference

Someone, somewhere has been deliberately selecting for more white, or these would not have occurred.

Like Black Eyed White rats.

Just what the breed needs eh -add deafness to everything else! Go on anyone, reply and ask about parents' and grandparents' heart and SM status! :)

I visited the AHT last week while a friend was having a litter of bull terriers hearing tested. Julia, the lady who does the tests said she would be suspicious of any white puppy of any breed being deaf.

Oh dear! :-( A friend of mine once had a white puppy in a litter - he was supposed to be a tricolour, but only had the tiniest bit of black along one ear. But deliberately breeding them - and with blue eyes?? I bet most of them will be deaf. :-(

Just curious, what about puppies that are meant to be all white? Does the same apply to them?

Many,, many years ago I had a white Border Collie.  He wasn't deaf.

White (ie lack of pigmentation) doesn't guarantee deafness, but the chances are about 5 times higher than usual and even higher when combined with blue eyes, and white puppies in breeds which are usually coloured should be tested.

A member of our agility club has a white deaf collie - with a smattering of black spots.  Marvellous how well he has been trained.

Looking at the photos the pup with the coloured patch on its side on my screen it doesn't look very black,it looks more grey with small black patches. wonder if it's not pure cav and they have mixed something in to get merle and they are double merles? Could explain the colour and the blue eyes also the two pups look very diffrent to each other to me they don't look like the same breed.

The ear shapes are different on those pups as well. They don't look like pure breeds to me. Think there may be some disappointed owners in the near future
