I am going to micro-chip my pups before they go off to their new homes. My question is - Once the new owner changes pup into their name if the the dog goes missing and the new owner is not contactable because they move on and don't update the details would the breeder then be contacted? Or if the registered owner has not bothered to update details would the dog just find it's way into rescue?

I would suggest you don't register the microchip into your name at all; only register the new owner's details but also put your landline as a contact number. Sometimes the database will bring up the chipper's details when an pwner's details are out of date but not always.

You could put yourself down as second contact and ask the buyer to maintain those details.

It's why I prefer as a breeder to use the Dog Tattoo register, http://www.dog-register.co.uk/ as I know for certain my details will always be there and I be contactable.

I do encourage new owners to also chip their dogs, but with chips it's all down to the new owners and if they don't keep you details on the chip registration your gone.

I know there is one chip registry that allows for dual registration so that the breeder can be the dual person, but can't remember Which one that is and you'd need to use their chips for this option.

Are you microchipping the pups yourself? If you are, then you can contact Petlog and provide them with a list of the pups registered names (in fact I don't think you need to do that even ... my memory has faded from 12 months ago :-( ) and their microchip numbers and request that you be logged against that litter as the breeder. This provides an additional point of contact plus registers you as the person responsible for their being in existence.

If not microchipping yourself, then it would be worth getting in touch with Petlog before they are chipped to enquire if it's possible to do this.
