Hi
Wondered if anyone could help, hopefully there iss someone awake at this hour !! , my lab (about 30kg) has strained herself over some rocks on the beach today and can hardly walk, after googling it there is conflicting information on giving ibuprofen to dogs.

I don't want to give it long term, just the once, would 1/2 a tablet be ok (100mg) for a 30kg Labrador ? Some websites say vets recommends 5mg/kg whereas other sites say never but are more geared toward long term treatment.

I'm probably going to give it to her with a snack but really wanted opinion on it first.

I would never give a dog medication unless recommended by a vet. If he dog is in that much pain then they need to be see out of hours .

Do NOT give your dog ibuprofen!

I really hope that you haven't poisoned your dog.  However did you think that you had the knowledge to administer medication. It is extremely likely that a qualified veterinarian would prescribe rest and Metacam, but only after a full examination.  I know someone who owned a cat and gave them ibuprofen as they didn't want to pay for a consultation.  The cat is now dead.

Take your dog to a vet.

I find it quite frightening how some people dose themselves and their pets with highly potent medication thinking that they know as much (or more) than qualified professionals :( Do they never think why these people study for many years and why there are stringent regulations regarding the manufacture and sale of these drugs ?? :( :(

As is often said 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing' :(

I would also add nor paracetamol. Actually unless agreed by the vet I wouldnt use any human medication on an animal
Hope the op has read these answers and not given anything

Thanks, I've not given anything, hence the posting.

It was more as there is so much conflicting information on the internet, apparently information from veterinary handbooks stating dosages, as you could say ibuprofen is toxic to humans if you gave the wrong dosage and most sites imply that poisoning of dogs is more to do with giving dogs a human dosage rather than a dosage based on weight, i.e giving 1000mg to a 4kg dog is toxic, and it could be argued giving the same to a 4kg baby would be toxic, sites argue that it can give dogs stomach ulcers which is just common sense as in high enough doses or continued use ibuprofen will give humans ulcers too.

Thanks for the opinions on the subject.

Thanks for the link Jeangenie, but that link basically applies to humans too, all those symptoms would happen if a human OD'd on ibuprofen too, if you click the link to the recommended drugs for dogs they all list the same OD symptoms (Rimadyl, Dermaxx, Previcox and Metacam.)

Also if you check the molecular structure for the 'dog friendly' drugs they are basically the same as the human equivalent and are pretty much drug company trade marks/brand names for animal versions of human drugs, which implies all this toxic to dog scare mongering is based around dosage and self medication and nothing else.

Murphy 123 you are basing your "knowledge" on stuff you have read on the internet which is a very dangerous thing to do. Ibuprofen is toxic to dogs-- it can cause liver damage in minimal doses. If your dog " can hardly walk" after a strenuous walk it is definitely a case for a vet, not googling, forums or any other sort of cyber information.
