My pup,aged 6 m , 18.5 kilos,has been diagnosed with giardia.
I have started him on a seven day regime of flagyl,250mg twice  a day.(my vets advice).
My American vet tech friends say I should  be also giving panacur concurrently...... They say the parasite can return  if I only give the flagyl...in fact online info says flagyl is only 65  per cent effective as opposed to the panacur ....90 per cent  effective. they say after the dual treatment the dog will be immune to the parasite which is an everyday threat here on my Italian country walks.
Any thoughts?

I'd go with using the Panacur half dose daily for a week.

Thankyou for the swift repy.... Do I use the panacur together with the flagyl?
The dose recommended for an 18 kg pup is 4g pct for 3 days....so I assume its 2 g for at least six days..
This is a first for me and with a pup I want to be sure...thanks..

I use Panacur 10% suspension, and the dose is 0.5ml per kg so an 18kg pup would get 9ml per day for 7 days for Giardia.

No Idea about the Flagyl (is it an antibiotic??)

Flagyl =Metronidazole. And for for the record, Flagyl alone cleared up Giardia in a litter of kittens I once had which caught it.

Metronidazole alone should do the trick as long as it is a long enough course.

Whichever one you use, Flagyl or Panacur, I think the secret is to ensure animals are dosed for long enough.  Like Barbara, I've used Panacur suspension for Giardia, and dosed for 7 days.  If Flagyl works I wouldn't be giving Panacur at the same time.  It would be overkill for me.

Thankyou all.I have kept him on just the flagyl and the diarhhea stopped after the first pill.his stool is still soft, smelly but forming better.  I was  worried that the two meds together may be too much for a pup and will stay with the flagyl for at least  seven days. If this persists I will change to panacur and am grateful for the correct dosage for pup,as there are several versions of panacur here...liquid,powder granules and pill...all with varying guidelines to the doseage.
I have read that many young dogs who have had this illness,if correctly treated the first time, and the parasite eradicated, may well become immune to the parasite.Have  people here found this to be the case? This is such a problem here, the farming is very basic..the cattle are kept indoors in large barns, their raw faeces  are regularly scattered onto the local fields, the lanes are spattered with it.Water drains onto the country footpaths and you cannot avoid contact. What with the ticks, leishmania carrying flies  ,the risk of heartworm, and now this, I am very homesick for uk with the dog friendly beaches we used to enjoy.
