Topic Dog Boards / Health / mucus discharge after season
- By Treacle [gb] Date 13.06.13 07:01 UTC
Willow started her first season 7 weeks ago and it's all over now. We kept her supervised and on a lead the whole time . Now she has a slight clear mucus like discharge ( only noticable to a hawk-eyed dog owner!! ) . I have googled it and am horrified to see that it can be a sign of prgnancy. Can anyone throw any light on this please?

I wouldn't worry too much if it had been a cloudy discharge then it would be something to be concerned about.

If she had other symptoms such as increased thirst , high temperature and showing signs of discomfort  that would point towards pyrometra.

If you are at all worried just pop and see your vet to put your mind at rest.

Thanks Lucy - so that can just be a normal thing can it? We really must get together soon. I'll message you on FB

Always see this in our bitches...has been cream/yellow/opaque....so long as not smelly I have been told it's hormonal and just things 'resetting'.

Have never found the cream/opaque discharge a reliable sign of pregnancy as we get it in all ours, pregnant or not,

The only time I have seen it in a non pregnant bitch was in a bitch who had vaginitis. That's a mild vaginal infection that doesn't really cause any problems but may need treatment. Most common in young bitches under the age of one I believe, hence often referred to as juvenile vaginitis.

Willow is only 10 months so it's possibly the juvenile thing. I was just anxious about the fact that it could be a sign of pregnancy. She went out with the dog minder in the fertile phase, but it was a place where other dogs don t go and she was on the lead and the minder said they hadn t seen any dogs. i am just being neurotic I'm sure. She's a lab if that makes any difference.

Don't worry too much...my youngest (same breed as yours) has the same after every season, sometimes it will hang out of her after a wee. It's only at certain times of her cycle. She is 2 and has never been mated. Her first season was the heaviest for it and it has been less the following two seasons.
