I have no idea what's got into my girl but in the ring only she won't stand, moves, jumps up etc and on the move just is soo sluggish.
I've tried different ways of handling her, have someone else handle her and for the past 2 shows she is getting worse.
I've practised at home and before we go in the ring, she stands still then and moves out and with purpose like she always has done, get in the ring and she's like a sack of spuds!!
A JH has taken her in and I could see it as she mentioned it too, so I know it's not just me as a handler!!
I've had bait out, bait hidden on the move and also on the stand, different types of bait. Free standing and also American style too...
I don't know what to think on this, she sees the judge and moves, which is something I've always struggled with...
She's now just over 2yrs but her behaviour is a pain as she's not a puppy any more :-/
Any ideas as I nearly withdrew her today
Take her out of the ring for a while. She is most likely bored with it. I had to take one out permanently as in the end I felt like I was going round the ring with a sack of spuds on the end of the lead :-( You may be lucky and she may come back to it. Not what you want to hear no doubt, but not every dog enjoys being shown.

Hmmm...
She will happily do the triangle etc at ringcraft and out of the ring..
Also we've just had a 5 month break and this was her 4th ch show this year and 6th overall, so not like I've overdone it either ..
Do you reckon it might be all the people watching ringside as its a lot more than at RC obviously...
Apparently her mother went through this phase too.. Nothing has happened to out her off either...
If it comes down to it and she really isn't enjoying it then yes I'd pull her altogether.

She's telling you that in the ring..you are no fun, being stressed and that she doesn't like that version of You.
If she will happily do it outside the ring, at home and anywhere else, it's the only likely answer.

Agree with Tooolz, you're probably sending 'stressed' vibes out when it's for real. I know mine rarely work quite as well for me in rally obedience at the actual trial when I've got a judge watching me! Difficult, but try to stay calm and relaxed and act as if it's just ringcraft. :-)

I do hear what you are saying, I'm not too bad going in but when she starts messing about I do get stressed.. I've tried playing with her etc. just wish he would sit or stand still like ALL of the others.. He also did this but not to the extremes as she does with me with another handler last week..
Why does she get bored in the real ring compared to a fun show or RC as tbh I treat her just the same, when se messes about it does start me flapping and then we have a cycle, absolutely fine at one show in Scotland, stood well moved well to start with too... Lol go figure
Probably something I'm doing sub consciously at some shows then..
Psst the last 2 shows haven't been the most riveting so I've too been bored before going in the ring, however I've tried to get excited for her before stepping in

It maybe as others have said that she is unhappy with you in the ring and picking up on your stress BUT, she will have done something in the ring which suggests 'playing up' to you for your stress to emerge in the first place.
So, it may be that she hasn't 'generalised' the training you do at home over into the Ring.
Coudl you take her to 'fun dog shows' (usually lots about during the summer months) when you could really jolly her along with a happy, light-hearted voice as she's working with you but where its no big deal if she doesn't get placed in the the prettiest bitch, waggiest tail type classes etc? That could give you both loads of practice in a relevant setting with lots of people, dogs and judges, PA systems in readiness for the 'real thing'.

I've taken this break which clearly hasn't helped me, I think I need to personally take a break from the ch shows for a while and like you say enjoy the fun ones.
I'm actually sitting ringside before I go in thinking god I'm so bored, so why would my dog therefore enjoy it?
Not all but some shows, so yes I need to get the bug back as I think that's what I've lost my actual enjoyment of it all..
Thanks for the input and advice...
Ill go and save myself some money now ;-)
Suejaw,
I think showing has to be enjoyable both for handler and for dog otherwise what's the point. Didn't you say she was also the same with the JH? Sounds like you both need a break and then if you return perhaps get someone else to handle her for a bit and see if that helps break any stress/boredom associations.

My Asti would trot beautifully next to me outside the ring etc. as soon as she went under the rope, I literally had to drag her around which was a shame as she showed so nicely as a youngster. In the end I gave up and stopped showing her.

I've got two more shows entered in the UK ad she will be handle by others to see d we can get a marked improvement on her enjoyment, I'm happy not to handle if she enjoys it with someone else over time.
I have also booked for the Munster circuit too, so really don't want to pay all that money and for it to be a major flop :-/

Twenty odd years ago we had a Boxer who outside the ring was fab, full of life, in the ring you could see her "deflate", she just didn't enjoy it so we stopped showing her.

I had a beardie do that so I joined a club and did a bit of basic agility occasionally and that helped.

Could be that she's sensing that you're not enjoying it either...... Hope you are both ready for the munster circuit!

Have you considered using "Rescue Remedy" or better still you could speak to Doreen Paige who does a whole range of Homeopathic Remedies, she would recommend the most relevant one to use for specific problems with your dog.

I'd save your money, Sue. If a dog ain't showing,it ain't showing!

I agree and took her out to a nearby carpark to do some practice yesterday, wouldn't move for toffee in a triangle or any direction for that matter. Got her back into our close and she moved like a dream..Was wondering if it was the collar she has on. I just don't think she see's the point in going in a direction which leads her to what?
I know her mother continued like this for the remainder of her time showing and she was made a champion even with her not interested attitude according to her breeder.

I've just read the critique for my girl when the junior had her in the ring, I thought she wasn't up for it but critique says moves very well... Lol
