Topic Dog Boards / Health / Clicking?

Frederick (GR) is now coming up to 5 months and developing nicely. I do have a concern and wonder if anyone has any ideas.

Sometimes when he gets up from resting I hear a click. He's certainly not in pain or lame, but I am beginning to worry it may be a problem brewing with his joints. Any ideas?

Well I'm not sure what it is either, but I've heard it with several of our large breed pups at around that age. I don't think it can have been associated with their hips as the dogs I've had scored with a history of clicking have had scores ranging from very good to average.

Some sort of ligament thing going on perhaps? I must say with ours, it was only a very temporary thing.

You can hear a slipping patella but I am not saying this is the problem but it is likely to be a joint somewhere and the knee is the most likely, at 5 months things are growing and get a bit out of relationship one with the other but it is worth watching for any hopping when moving as if it slips when the dog is moving it can cause problems latter in life because each slip causes damage even if it is slight and that in turn causes the laying down of calcium deposit in the joint.

Oban clicked from the time we got him till about a year old.  His clicks moved from place to place, elbows, hips, shoulders, back and more than one place at a time.  There was no sign of pain or discomfort, Vet said just keep an eye on him.  Ear.  Well, at 10 months he developed a limp that only I could see, then his breeder saw it, the Vet never did, we did all sorts of things for three months to get him over the limp.  Till it simply disappeared, thankfully just Before the Ortho. Vet appt.  And he stopped clicking too.  He's 5.5 years old now and doesn't click anymore.

What does your Vet say?  What does Frederick's breeder say?

I am Frederick's breeder :) . He's due for a vet check in the next couple of weeks so will mention it then. As I said it doesn't seem to be causing any problems but the click does seem to be coming from his back end somewhere.

could it be cartilage? I have a friend whose knees make a right racket!
