My daft dog was out in the garden about 10.30 last night and came rushing in and into his crate carrying ...a BIG hedgehog

He just put it down and sat looking at it!!  I explained to him it was a wild animal and he couldn't keep it :-D

We have had 7 dogs over the years, the others would nose or paw hedgehogs but none have ever picked one up before.

I took it back out and it toddled off to wherever in about 10 minutes

Like I said, Daft Dog :-)

When Chaos was about 3 months old last year he had a hedgehog friend in the garden, he would go out to see it most nights. If we put him to bed in his crate and the hedgehog was outside he would cry to go out until he had seen it. Once he had said hello he was happy to go to bed! They are very strange!

Slightly off topic but are you willing to report your hedgehog?  They are much less common than they used to be and The Mammal Society is looking to establish accurate numbers and locations

More info on their website...  Or via Springwatch home page

One of my dogs is v keen on our h hogs and likes to stare at them:)

Merlot brought one into the house a couple of years ago and it was huge...she managed to pick it up but her teeth got caught in it's prickles (She did not harm it) but she could not get it out of her mouth...She was running round trying to shake it out !! We rescued it and it now resides in the garden and wanders through about 4 of the next door neighbour's gardens too. The puppy met it for the first time a week ago and was fascinated.. but she was happy to just sniff and look. I am sure it is the same one as we have seen it regularly over the last couple of years and it seems completely unperturbed about the  dogs. They now give it a sniff but leave it alone. Unlike the woodpigeon who landed right in-front of the puppy...she could not resist it and it was unable to survive her bounce and squash tactic !! Oooops...there is a lot of weight in a 15 week old Bernese puppy... Feathery toys that fall from the sky are fair game to her.

Aw bless.........

I really miss our hedgehog he/she came for years and then nothing....... probably killed or died I expect, always thought that we would have others come.... but so far nothing, they are pretty territorial so I guess ours was a male as no hedgehog babies :-(

Lucky you, to those who still have a visitor. :-) Funny how our dogs seem to like them too.

I had a cat many yrs ago who came home with a kitten! He was a great big tom that would go out fighting all the others toms every chance he got,it cost him an eye as we think the other cat caught it during battle but he carried that kitten so carefully up the garden,we let him keep it as we had no idea where it came from lol.

Glad I've not got the only hedgehog retriever. I wondered where he had found a ball the other day when he was tanking around with something in his mouth until he stopped and dropped it at my feet. The other two just looked and backed off after a quick sniff. Hedgehog was not too bothered as I saw him walking up the drive the next day eating slugs.

We've had our "new" greyhound (ex-racer) 2 weeks tomorrow and he's already managed to dispatch 2 hedgehogs :-(. We had no idea we had any, we've never seen them before.
We've decided he won't be allowed alone in the back garden after dark any more...he'll go on his lead and be taken out the front.

I can't believe he would pick up what must feel like a mouthful of needles....bizarre.

Well hes done it again!!!, don't know if it was the same hedgehog but a big beastie anyway, straight in and into his crate then sat looking at it again!!! Just hope he is not going to make a regular habit of it.

I would not be too concerned however I would be worried if the "Master hedgehog" comes and carries him away to his crate. ;)
