Hi All,

If a dog's dam is a carrier of VWd, but the sire is clear, will all the puppies be carriers, but not affected? Or is there potential for puppies to be affected?

Would you personally breed a litter from a bitch who iws a carrier?

Some will be carriers, and some will be clear,  non will be affected. All pups will be totally healthy with regards to this disease, for onward breeding you would need to test pups to establish clear / carrier but otherwise no issues.
Pups could be tested very young and select from clear pups only if that was preferable to allow wider breeding options I next generation (depends on prevalence of issue in the breed)

Yes I would breed a carrier ... The whole point of genetic tests is not to exclude healthy dogs ( and carriers are healthy) from gene pool but to ensure affected dogs are not produced. A carrier may have many other positive traits worthy of perpetuation JMHO

You have re-affirmed what I already believed but just thought I would double check. A friend is buying a pup from a litter sired by a clear dog however the dam is a carrier.

not true....there could be male hemophiliac pups and carrier females as well as normal being produced here....
http://www.thereforyou.com/understanding-hemophilia/hemophilia-genetics/
Scroll down to carrier mother and free father......you will see there IS a 25 per cent chance possibility for a carrier female and 25 per cent chance  for an affected male to be produced from this mating. this leaves  a fifty percent chance of normal  offspring being produced in this cross .

XX. (Carrier female)   x         Xy(normal male)

Produces.

XX(clear female).   Xy(normal male).   X.X(carrier female)  X.y(hemophiliac male).

if I were buying a pup from this breeding I'd buy a female.

Josh,

You should have a look at info on canine varieties of the condition- not human sites. There are different types of the condition, with different patterns of inheritance. First you need to know if the types involved in the breeding has been identified by DNA testing. Then check out this site as a starter http://vetgen.com/canine-vwd1.html

I agree with freelancer in that you should find out what type of vwd.the dog has.this site  below ,for dogs as well, states that different pups can exhibit the condition in varying degrees of seriousness...the whole topic is very complicated.I used the human link to show mode of inheritance.
