Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Show lead for puppy

How should I go about getting a puppy used to a show lead? He's a Japanese Spitz so a good bit bigger and stronger than when I was getting my Shih Tzu used to the show lead. And my Shih Tzu was an adult when he first went on a show lead, so he was over the jumping about stage. The show lead I had for my Shih tzu is very fine, its nylon, so I'm looking for something a bit stronger for the spitz.

Not sure what your breed uses in the show ring. I too have a spitz and the show tack is different to that used for walking and I have always found that they behave in a different way once you put the show equipment on - they would fight to get to the bench on their walking gear but the moment they had the lighter weight show tack on would behave as they should walking on a loose lead. Never actually taught this but they seem to know just how much stress they can apply dependent on the weight of the equipment being used, anyone else found this.

Ha ha, I must give that one a try. I've got a very fine 'ordinary' lead in the back of the drawer, for a puppy. I'll try him on that in the back garden today and see how he goes.

Thanks, I've had a look but I think they're a bit expensive, at £30 -£40 for a lead.
