Hello, as I know nothing about this subject, I knew there would be a lot who did!

I have just had a friend on the phone in tears this afternoon, as her young Golden puppy dog had mated her 9 year old veteran bitch, his full aunt. She would never have contemplated the mating even if the ages had been ok, she has the bitch booked into the vets for Monday & Wednesday to get her injected. :(

What are the side effects and could the mating still "take", how long will she be in season after the injections? She is on Day 17 today. I had to tell her I don't know about this put would put a posting on Champdogs, as there will be lots who know about this subject?

Thanks, any help would be great so I can pass it on to her.

when my yorkie bitch was in her first season she escaped and by the time we found her she was already tied to a westie we rushed her to the vets who gave her the injection and in effect had what we have the morning after pill and all it did was bring her back into season early

I believe the injections to prevent the pregnancy, now take place at day 3 & 5 after mating, so wondered if there had been a change in the side-effects too?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my little JR cross was the result of an injection that didn't work, they thought everything was fine till his mum started to put on weight !!!! He also has 2 half brothers, same sire different bitch, that it didn't work for either. Ingrid

Hi, I've only had to do this once and it was a long time ago so things may have changed. She was mated on day 8, had the injection the same day and was in season for at least another 2 weeks, may even have been 3 weeks, seemed ages anyway, and was fertile for much longer than normal. I think the vet said to take great care it didn't happen again as she couldn't have another injection during that season. Also there is a slightly higher risk of pyometra after one of these injections, than after a normal season, so watch for symptoms.

I was going to say the same, every dog that i have known who have had this injection have got pyometra and had to be spayed, that is why i would be very wary about giving it to one of my dogs, just be on the safe side keep an eye on her.

There is a new injection that can be given anytime between mating and day 42 - anyone know anything about this?

I know of a Cocker mated by an Irish R&W and she was injected, no signs of pyo at all. The new injections seemingly, are given 3 & 5 days after mating and from what I have heard put the bitch back into season a week. Another friends Golden was caught by a mongrel and she was injected, in season an extra week and no signs of pyo.

Is it not better to risk the injection, then bring a litter of unplanned pups into this world?
- By sylvieL [fr] Date 24.01.03 21:24 UTC
Yes here it is called Alizine, I know it isn't available everywhere though (not in the USA). I used it once, my bitch came back in season 2 months and a half later, which Iwas told is common. Supposedly there's no risk for pyometra at all, in fact in case of an open pyo it can be used to flush the uterus.

Yes christine i know of some one that had there bitch injected at around day 32, and she aborted the pups, within 8 hours, the vet gives an injection, and then 24 hours later the bitch gets a second, and the bitch should abort the pups within a day or two of the second injection. No side affects for the bitch in the case, and as far as im aware the bitch didnt come in to season for another 2-3 weeks after.

kelly

ps it was my vet that told me about the injection about a year ago, and i pasted the info onto this person i knew.
- By sylvieL [fr] Date 24.01.03 21:26 UTC
Well what I would do with a 9 year old bitch is do an abortion / spay when she's out of season.
- By emma [gb] Date 24.01.03 21:40 UTC
Thats strange as one of my bitches was 'got at' on her first or 2nd season by a lurcher that jumped our 6 foot fence, she was given the jab and then went on to have pyo after her 2 nd litter.

The injection must be given within 24 hours

Friend of mine has just gone down this path with one of her bitches, the injections were given on day 3 and day 5, we were told that her season would last upto 2 wks longer than normal but there was a risk that she would still have pups. I'm glad to say she's not had a litter and is very fit and well with no side effects from her point of view - the boys on the other hand had other ideas lol.

I know someone who had the injection on her bitch, as she got caught at the end of her season! 9 weeks later she had a puppy born with it's insides hanging out, and another live one, who at over a year old seems to be healthy.

I think getting her spayed might be a better option. The injection increases the liklihood of a PYometra, and will prolong the season for another 3 weeks.

Spoke to my friend last night, she has been told all sorts of different stories about the injection too, none of them the same story.

Those I have spoken to have had no pups after the injection and no pyo's so fingers crossed she'll find out more when she goes to the vet on Monday. She said, that the pup hasn't even bothered with the bitch afterwards and he hadn't been bothering before so she thinks it's just a complete flukey accident...but one she won't go through with.

She doesn't breed very often and has never had an accident like this in 20 years of owning Goldens, she is loathe to get the bitch spayed as it changes their coats and this girl is doing very nicely in Veteran classes.

UPDATE:

Friend went to see vet about the jab, so for anyone else in the same boat who wants a genuine advice on this.

The new mismate injections are given at Day 3 & 5 after mating. If your bitch is in season, it shouldn't prolong it anymore than normal. Chances of a pyo are very slim, as are your bitch being in-whelp. Hope this helps anyone who lands up in a similar situation.

Which product was used, as my friends puppy is under 18 months old, and her bitch was jabed but still had pups.
- By Lily Munster [gb] Date 31.01.03 21:44 UTC
I'm not sure but friend thinks it was something beginning with "M"??????
- By rainbow [gb] Date 02.02.03 20:22 UTC
my bitch had the injection at 3 days 5 days and 7 days it didnt work she had 5 healthy and lovely pups last friday.. mum is doing well and has no side effects from the jabs either
- By Brainless [gb] Date 02.02.03 20:28 UTC
I am glad for you, as my friend has wondered if the deformed puppy her bitch had (born with it's insides out) was due to the jab. Don't suppose wshe will ever know.
- By rainbow [gb] Date 02.02.03 20:31 UTC
what a horrid experience for your friend and her bitch.... like you say you will never know if the jab did cause it... i have never heard of the jab causing deformities before only puppies and usually a small litter which makes me wonder how many my bitch would have had without having the jab.... so i am glad she did have the jab even though she did have pups
- By Brainless [gb] Date 02.02.03 20:35 UTC
My freind di end up with one live bitch pup, so it wasn't a total disaster. Obviously she keot her, with it only being one!
- By nutkin [gb] Date 02.02.03 20:51 UTC
I had a pup once born with its insides outside its body. I was so concerned I contacted the vets and to cut a long story short I was worried about hereditary element. I was told by the vet who had contacted a genetist. That the reason this type of malformation occurs is that the bitch was exposed to some kind of virus or bacteria or medication that will cause a deformed puppy. It was not hereditary. Biggest causes are E-coli or food poisoning etc.
- By charm [gb] Date 02.02.03 20:46 UTC
My bitch had 3 deformed pups, insides hanging out, spoke to Malcolm Willis,(Genetics) He asked if the bitch had any trauma around 2-3 weeks in whelp, thinking back she had been shocked by one of our other bitches snarling and growling at her at this stage of her pregnancy, said that this was the probable cause of the stomach not joining in the pups. This was about 15 years ago, very traumatic experience, live pups all had to be pts at birth.
- By Lily Munster [gb] Date 03.02.03 09:52 UTC
The mismating injection is only 97% effective, so I'm sure there will be cases of where bitches remain pregnant, but then the Pill for women is only 99% effective...sure someone could show the 1% instances where it's failed!
- By Kash [gb] Date 03.02.03 10:28 UTC
ME! I'm the 1% that failed:o :p Why aren't you at work by the way?

Week off!!!!!! Yippee :D
- By Jane Ashwell [gb] Date 05.02.03 22:43 UTC
Had it done on Wiggi 3 yrs ago. Her last litter had one pup with deformed front leg, one inside out and one with cleft palate. We and vet put this down to her getting hold of slug bait while in whelp, now Im thinking differently. ps 3 leg pup kept alive and is now 2 yrs and is smashing.
Often these chats p*** me off, but this has been hugely interesting.
