One of my boy puppies has started cocking his leg already at not quite 3 months old. This is a med BC sized breed. This seems awfully young to me. But I have  had mainly girls over the years. What is the usual age for leg cocking to start?

Not sure what the usual age is but my BC pup was already cocking his leg in the garden when I collected him at 7.5 weeks!! The litter were being kept with both mum and dad around constantly so I  assumed it was learnt behaviour. He never cocked his leg outside the garden until he was around 12 weeks. My lab boy was around 10 months before he started doing it and even then half the time he would squat instead.

My boy was considered young when he started cocking at 5 months.

My almost 8 month old boy still hasn't cocked his leg yet. :-)

12months and still squatting!

My BC was about a year old and even now it is often a half hearted cocking :)
Whereas my min pin was cocking by 10 weeks. Unfortunately he has to be watched like a hawk as he will cock indoors sometimes as well.

My border collie never cocked he always squatted right up to 14.  My beagley girl however has always cocked from being 4 months old.

Nando was a good nine months before he cocked his leg, and even then (and this sounds strange) it was only ever when my niece was with us. It took him about 12 months before he would cock his leg when I was walking him alone.. bizarre!

My boy is 1 and has done it once (last weekend) and is now squatting again

I'm not sure that it's age related. I had 2 Chow Chow litter brothers, one started at about 10 weeks old and the other was gone 2 years before he did (this one did have an undescended testicle).  Both were neutered at around 6 months old due to my inexperience and my vets insistence that my boy was at high risk of cancer.

My early 'cocker' was bigger, stronger and just matured earlier than his brother but was a big softy.  The slower brother, was physically weaker but mentally had a steely determination to be in charge of his brother and usually got his own way.  Both boys never lifted their legs on their own property, only on walks.

Our earliest leg-cocker started practising as soon as we brought him home at 8 weeks - he used to stand straddling two steps! It wasn't long before he could do it on the flat :-) (Large working breed)

Our latest boy was about 7 months before he could manage it, but to be honest, we've mostly had bitches so I don't think our 4 males over a lifetime are a particularly representative sample.

Actually I've got a couple of bitches (toys) who cock their legs. One of them cocks them both at times and ends up doing a handstand :-)

Thank goodness for that!  My Border Collie will be 8 in August and he has never cocked.

Nice to know my boys are not the only ones that keep all 4 feet on the floor lol. Actually I don't mind my lads not lifting a leg, saves having to hose walls, fences and tyres down as well as the patio!

Not yet three months and he has the balance to do that without falling over?  You may have an athletic prodigy there.  :)  My boy, a Lab, started just past 8 months and often was wobbly about it in the beginning.

thanks for all the replies. It sounds like he his early but not totally strange. I have not seen him do it but his owner asked me about it. apparently it is not a full blown leg cock, weeing on an upright surface, but rather he is standing on 3 legs to wee with the fourth lifted off the ground, a bit like a bitch. Sounds like an intermediate stage to me. It will be interesting to see how it develops.
