The breeder of my next dog has emailed me to say that her dog was mated on two occasions and she had ovulation tests done so is pretty certain that the right time was hit. She goes on to say that the dog is showing early signs of being prenant. Out of interest and mainly because I have nothing better to do then sit here, in my dogless household, waiting for my new puppy, what would you say are the early signs of pregancy? The dog would have been mated during mid May

The first indication I have is that the bitch is more clingy ;-) My bitch is due in about 10 days and she went off food for a few days at about 3 weeks, being sick a few times at this time too. She has also been less energetic, not wanted to run and play with the other dogs. Not her usual behaviour :-)

it is too early for any signs. Having had a bitch who had 4 phantoms, her signs were too early, when she finally got pregnant her signs and symptoms were on par with my other bitch.

Sometimes the teats pink up at about 3/4 weeks and they can have sickness.

If she was only mated mid May then there won't be any signs yet, it is far too early. Except perhaps the clinginess, but a bitch can be clingy just after a season anyway. Early morning sickness, and a bitch off her food in the morning, are usually the first signs I've had. However, as already said, this could also be signs of a phantom.

Thanks all. I was just a bit curious and bored:)
Dont know the exacts dates she was mated, just that it was twice and was successful, which I assume means a tie was achieved. The breeder is experienced and the mum to be is on her fifth and last litter so I guess she recognises her dogs signs from previous occasion. Still keeping fingers crossed that I will have a pup in September, plenty of things to go wrong in the meantime.

I thought the Kennel Club wouldn't register more than 4 litters from the same bitch??

Kennel Club will not accept an application to register a litter when:

The dam has already whelped 4 litters (as of the 1st January 2012 the limit changed from 6 litters to 4 litters). As of this date the Kennel Club will no longer register any further litters from any bitch which our records show has already whelped 4 litters.

My mistake, I misunderstood what was said, this will be her fourth litter.
