Can anyone who has used either of the above, advise on which they would recommend as a training aid. I know that there is no substitute for proper training but I have recently had an operation on both of my hands and it will be some time before they are back to full strength. I dont want my dogs to suffer by not being able to take them on walks but because they become exited when they first start out, I feel that I need the help of one of these aids. I have a collie x and a springer x collie.

As these aids are ery similar, I am confused as to which to use as I have read on other boards that some prefer one type while others reccommend the other. I dont really want to buy one type only to find that that one isnt the right one and I have to buy the other.

Please can anyone help?

I'm no great expert on them, as no matter how hard I tried my Terv just got more and more upset with hers even after very careful intro, so I came to believe that they don't suit all dogs, esp. very sensitive ones. Having said that, I know many people who have had great success withthem :)

I tried the Gentle Leader which is supposed to have been designed so that it presses an acupressure point on the back of the dog's head which is calming :) I did like the design, it seemed easy to fit and to take on and off.

The Halti has recently been re-designed to fit better and I believe is also padded, or else there is a padded version. I'm sure others will give you more help, just thought I'd start you off :)

It might be a good idea to ask if you can try them both on your dogs in the pet shop, perhaps an assistant would help.

I hope your hands recover their full strength soon :)

hi guest
i've used both on my dobe and i find that the gentle leader is a better fit .The halti tends to ride up the snout -even the padded one so out of the two I would prefer the gentle leader -all this said my lad can still pull against both of them ( allthough not as bad as without )

I would say the gentle leader every time. The webbing is softer, with no hard edges, and the design icorporates a slide on the loop that tightens on the nose. This allows it to be adjusted to fit snugly, thereby preventing it being chewed when slack, so can be left on when off lead, or when you aren't looking.

With both I would always advise using a half slip collar to attach the lead to both the headcollar and collar, in case the dog manages to get out of the headcollar. With the half slip it soesn't impede the use of the head collar.

We have4 both available for sale at training class, but nearly all owners once fitted with one prefer the Gentle leader.

Hi, I have used a Halti for a while but on getting a gentle leader have found it much better on my GSD, it doesn't ride up, I found even the padded Halti did that.
