I've started this one after laughing my socks off after Josh told us of "Fluff" the tortoise.

Years ago, when I was married, I showed guinea pigs, and, like all cavy people, often had surplus stock.  I had a friend in Warwickshire who had a list of folk wanting pets, and there was no interest in my area.  I duly delivered several pets to my friend, to home for me.  Bless her, she phoned me up one evening, most embarrassed, to say she had found that one had no front teeth.

I felt awful, and had never seen this before, but went to fetch him back home, just to be a pet.  For folk who don't know, the front teeth are like any rodents, chisel teeth.  The grinding teeth are found in the back of the mouth, and difficult to get to.  He did appear to eat dry food no problem, but he had his own grater, for his carrots, and beetroot.

I had always been the one to name pets, but my hubby really took to this pet, and I said, well you name him then.  Never again!  We had a toothless guinea called DRACULA!

Oh I love it! :)

None of ours have been particularly silly. We did have a dog when I was a child called Chester. My dad named it when it arrived as it was a boy and limped. Something to do with a general? Anyway next morning the limp had gone and dad discovered she was a girl! Name stuck tho :)

When I was very young my parents had a cat who was named Bimbo, there was a song of that name doing the rounds at the time. Today it's not the sort of name I would want to be shouting out for a cat to come in for its tea.

When I was a teenager, my best friend had a dog (that her dad had) named Lusty - it was very embarrassing taking him for a walk :(
- By Celli [gb] Date 24.05.13 07:54 UTC
Our first and finest cat was called Kinkum, he got this odd name as my mums knickname for the bits of poo stuck to an animals bum was Klinkumdodies, as a kitten Kinks didn't believe in cleaning his own bum, that's what the human staff were for, so he ended up being Kinkum.

No very funny names here really.

The most amusing would have been hampsters - Yoda The Chubby One and Mr. Tinklebinks (both female), but no irony like Drakula the gummy guinea (LOL, this is brill :-D ).

We currently have a Koi named One Eyed Willy - (he only has one eye).

Also have a grass carp with some sort of spinal deformity and he's bent in a 'S' shape, he's called Snake Hips.

Out of our 30 pond fish, only 3 have names, the 2 'disabled' ones, and a gold fish called Bob, that came to us as a tiny little unhealthy scrap of a thing won at a funfair. It took us a few years of keeping him in a tank to get him big enough to 'roll with the big boys' in the pond.

(the 'disabled' fish came to us when their previous owners wanted to get rid of their pond, so we've no idea how their problems came about).

Knew of a GSD (b) called Bambi and a big male Rott named Cuddles

We have a big koi called Shovel-guts as he will take food from your hand, if you put your hand in with no food it will grab the end of your finger and slurp loudly! every time time you go near the pond it comes to the edge and makes slurping noises
- By parrysite [gb] Date 24.05.13 09:38 UTC
We had two gold fish called Whoopi Goldfish and Tuna Turner!
- By Jodi Date 24.05.13 09:54 UTC
We had two pet sheep called Mango and Chutney, our son came up with the names. When Chutney died at ten years old, Mango went to live with a friend who kept a few sheep and also a ram. When Mango was fourteen, the ram suddenly decided he fancied her after all and she had a lamb, her first! She died the following year and the owners decided to keep the lamb on, they usually went into a freezer, and called her Mango Too.

Knew of a GSD (b) called Bambi

For 13 years now I have wanted to call a Malinois Bambi. That came from knowing the first one (a retired police dog) who was so tough and aggressive but could be so soft at times. I used to say he looked like a deer, and when he begged with sad eyes he looked like Bambi whose mother had just been shot. But when I got one of my own I couldn't call her Bambi as I already had a Dandy and it would be too confusing, and since then my new husband has point blank refused me calling any other Mali Bambi; "I will not stand outside and shout BAMBI!"
My first Mali ended up being Ripley, because as I brought her home from the breeder, with a friend driving (no driver in the family then) I said "I need a name for a tough bitch" and the friend instantly replied "Ripley!" as in from the Alien films. She was a tough bitch!

I don't really have any very daft names (or maybe I just don't think so LOL!), although I do have a cat called Mouse -he was tiny as a kitten.

Lol what a great name for a toothless g pig.

At work I had a pair of rats called you and you. We had a cage of females and at the time I didn't realy like rats, had a few litters and rehomed most. One of the mum's I called ratty, and her daughter's I kept I called Munroe, ice and fade. Any way I'd give them treats threw the bars and call there names, I hadn't named the other two as I didn't like them but they would come up to the bars to get a treat so I'd say "here you go you", or "oi you". They both ended up responding to you.
Also has another rat there called physico as with the students she was loverly but with me I had to buy thick gloves just to feed and water her! She too a dislike to me the first days she came in for some reason. Lucky she went all bepressed at one point and she would let me handle her and she liked me after that and cheered up.

Also had two male rats I misssexed called cutie and sweety

Had a mouse called crack as he use to act like he was on the stuff but told the younger students it was because he was crackers if they asked

Years ago I knew a couple of guys with a bichon called Poo Poo and a cat called Wee Wee. They were a lovely, well spoken, well to do couple but one was very much a queen.
He was always lamenting that Poo Poo wouldn't eat his smoked chicken, I was in a minimum wage job at the time and remember salivating at the thought of such a tasty treat.  The poor little dog was spoilt in the true sense of the word and was overweight and seemed sad most of the time, he didn't enjoy being the surrogate child :(
- By cutewolf [gb] Date 24.05.13 11:28 UTC
I keep reptiles, and it's amazing how many people have huge snakes (reticulated pythons, burmese pythons etc) with names like Fluffy or Princess!

One of our snakes has an... unusual name. I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to post it here! It all came from my partner misunderstanding the scientific name of the species (fuliginosus). It turns out she is actually a different species to the one we thought so it's not even relevent anymore, but the name stuck!
- By Pinky Date 24.05.13 12:06 UTC
Many years ago I had a pair of ginger tabby cats known as Benson and Hedges, my neighbour had a pair of black and white cats known as Lambert and Butler, we both used to feel a bit daft when out calling the cats in at night!!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 24.05.13 12:38 UTC
We haven't got one yet, but my hubby is determined to call a dog after a scientist, as in Einstein from Back to the Future. I have vetoed Einstein, so it's looking like our next boy may end up being called Herschel!!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 24.05.13 12:39 UTC
If ever I get a donkey I'm going to call it Hotey. (Donkey Hotey. Geddit?)
- By ginjaninja [gb] Date 24.05.13 13:03 UTC
We had a grey cat we bred called Wellington (the whole litter had generals names) - when he died his identical replacement was called Boot . . .

At university I had a VW Golf w/ one wing mirror called Vincent Van Golf . . .
- By Bunnyfluff Date 24.05.13 15:27 UTC
madasarat, Chester was a cowboy in Gun Law who walked with a limp, played by Dennis Weaver. Brilliant series.
- By labs [gb] Date 24.05.13 16:09 UTC
When I worked at a Vets I learnt that it was best not to let children name pets, with names like Bogbrush, Cowpat and Chocolate face having come through the doors!!! The worst one was the children who named their nearly all white kitten with a little black smudge under it's nose Hitler, that did not go down well the the Austrian vet that they were seeing.

My most silly name for one of my dogs is Wiggle, I had her 3 days but couldn't come up with a name to suit her. I took her to my friends and she kept going into the back garden to where the bird table was looking for bits that had fallen off, my OH kept retrieving her and she kept following him back down the garden wiggling all the way!!
- By madasarat [gb] Date 24.05.13 17:00 UTC
Thanks Bunnyfluff, never knew where he got it from! :)
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 24.05.13 17:45 UTC
My parents cat was named babe when they got it from the blue cross.she is gorgeous looking so they kept the name although when my Dad stands in the garden calling "babe" I'm sure it raises a few eyebrows :D
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 24.05.13 18:14 UTC
Oh I don't know, sometimes they come up with fun names, like the cocker on my cocker forum named Apples - cute and unusual! I also used to know a cocker called Shoe, because she liked to fall asleep with her nose in a shoe!

Another friend's dog was called 'Little One' all her life because they had trouble thinking of a name, and in the end it just stuck!
- By Jodi Date 24.05.13 22:20 UTC
Following on from the dog called Wiggle, someone I know has a working cocker who can't sit still for a second, called Fidget.
- By LJS Date 25.05.13 05:28 UTC
We have Bog , often followed by off. We also have Puddles whose real name is Mars Bar 2 but when she had her hips scored and it was so bad that my OH said we had bought a dud so she started to be known as Dudley but soon went to Puddles because of her love of puddles !

We also have a cat called Stinky bum ( real name is Cinnamon) because she likes to stick her bum in your face when she is having a fuss :-0

Then there is Dave who is known as Princess :-P

My daughter also has a name that raises eyebrows. Her real name is Indigo but the children at her nursery couldn't pronounce it and got shortened to Dingo and it has sort of stuck ! Poor girl :-P

- By Luckygirl [gb] Date 25.05.13 12:11 UTC
We have Bear the Caucasian ovcharka who is known as the 'ovcharka-er flopper'! Since when he decides a walk isn't over he just flops! As I'm only 5 foot 2 it's quite hard to get this nine month old baby up :O he's done it numerous times, including on walk at bradgate park where he received a round of applause from other walks and a cross country team!

We also have a cat called tequila cause she was a fiery kitten ;)
- By dollface Date 25.05.13 14:31 UTC
We had a bearded dragon given to us who's name was Fluffy lol

T-Bone who is a girl who I named- she's just very big boned for a Boston.

2 cats I named Tequila & Whiskey and a dog named Cuervos- boy do we sound like we like to drink hahah
- By goldie [gb] Date 25.05.13 19:26 UTC
Many years ago I wanted another cat and hubby said I could only have another if we called him THE FONZE so I agreed but never liked his name really. I used to call him fonzy.
- By Harley Date 25.05.13 22:24 UTC
We had two guinea pigs who were called Charlie Maurice and Mr Padinski.
- By tooolz Date 26.05.13 07:28 UTC
I had a big black standard poodle called Witney Houston, a GSD called Tippex ( how we marked him as POL in the nest) and named two white boxer puppies Nelson and Winnie Mandela.
My son had a lizard called 'Wizard'.... he couldn't say lizard ;-) he was only little.
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 26.05.13 11:47 UTC
My daughters neighbour had an English Springer called Askit ;-)

My old girl was know as grumpy stumpy, but only as she had to have her tail amputated and was a right grump when she didn't get her own way. Her real name was Chloe :-)

We had a couple name their cocker spaniel pup Sandwiches, I should imagine they had a fair few jokes about it, apparently the guy used to have a book read to him as a child about a spaniel called Sandwiches

At work bored and noticed this old thread.

Love it.

Our dogs are named after Disney characters - the kids named our first Newf who, had to be a disney character - and as she had a lovely fur coat they named her 'Cruella' ! - Ella for short.

Our youngest of the same breed was home bred, and at 2 weeks would scream and scream to get out the whelping box (she chose us). Again, she had to be a Disney name, so we named her after the Finding Nemo character 'Darla' - the girl that screams and shakes the fish!

Our cats were all Only fools and horses characters - Boycie, Del, Rodney Cassie (and Trigger RIP)

Guinea pigs - We have 5 = 'Fat pig, Fatter pig and the 3 mops'

17 chickens with assorted names - Sharon , Pamela ( after P. Anderson - hubbys idea as she has nice 'breasts') - Side show Bob - our latest ex battery hen - as she has the same hair as Side show Bob from the Simpsons!

And our little Romanian rescue 'Foster dog ' FEMALE (who incidently will never leave as Darla is convinced they are twins and soul mates) is called Kevin - after the big bird in 'UP' who they call Kevin - but is actually female.

Remembered another one.

Some neighbours of my parents had an all white cat who usually walked about with its tail in the air. They called it Polo. Now being very young at that time my dad explained it was because polo's were all white with a hole in the middle. It did take me a few years to catch on to that!
- By nesstaffy [gb] Date 18.09.13 17:50 UTC

Our female cat Savannah's knickname is ,Teeny Tiny Tollie Toes, tollie is Scottish for poo, she stands in it a lot.
She is however, becoming a tad rotund, so it might change to Teeny Tiny Tubby Tollie Toes, if she's not careful.

- By hairypooch Date 19.09.13 11:13 UTC
My latest addition, Briard pup, is called Wookee.(changed the spelling) He is named after the star wars character who is called Chewbacca, but Chewbacca is actually a Wookey. They look so much alike there was no other name for him. The person who created the Wookey actually based it upon the look of his Briard, only found this out after I named him. His breeder also lives near Wookey hole in Somerset so two reasons for his silly name. His nicknames are just as stupid, Lord Wookington, Wookster...you get the picture...poor dog is getting confused with all the names.

His name gets nearly as much attention as he does but OH doesn't feel comfortable using his name when out in public so has resorted to calling him Wook.

I won't embarrass myself further by listing all of my other animals names as there as too many but my Priarie Dogs are called Sid and Gunther. Sid because he looks like the sloth in the film Ice Age and Gunther because it is German for warrior and he is built like one and my German friend named him.

All this comes back to haunt me when we are sitting in the vet room and their names are called out...even more hilarious when they put your surname on the end of their names LOL
