I posted last time as a visitor regarding my search for a newfoundland breeder via the breed society so here is the update. My husband and I visited today and was made most welcome by the breeders. I took my pamphlet from the society and asked some of the questions in it but were told the majority of the answers without having to ask the questions and everything was as it should be (all hip and heart tested, puppies to be returned if cannot cope ect). Met all of their dogs (all 9ish) and adored each and everyone and they obviously loved and were loved by them all. So all in all I think I have found my breeder of the next addition to our family.
I did want to ask - Is it normal for puppies to be innoculated or not?
Nik

It depends on the age at which you get them. Our vet won't vaccinate pups before they are 10 weeks old, because they still have a lot of maternal antibodies at that age (especially if their mum has free access to them whenever she wants) and the vaccine wouldn't "take" properly.
So if you get one under 10 weeks of age in this area, it won't be vaccinated.

When I got Kassie at 8 weeks old she'd already had some kind of 'parvo' jab?- that the breeder had done herself- I still had to have the usual two jabs at 9 and 11 weeks my vet does them:)

My beardie pup is being vacinnated on monday (8wks) and again 2 wks later. My cocker had had her 1st vacinnation when we got her as she was 12.5wks old by then.

congrats on finding the right breeder for you - it's suprising how much difference it can make! With our first dog the breeder was great until we had left and then realy didn't want to know - but the second dog that we got (from different breeders!) have been fantastic! I still meet up with her and still still likes to hear from us and really doesn't mind me badgering with all sorts of questions.
Our first dog was collected at 12 weeks and had no vacs at all but our new pup (collected at 8 weeks) came already having had her first injection and with her vets cetificate for her check up and 1st vac. They also suggested that we get our own vet to check her over on the same or next day so they he and we were happy.
As I said - it has made a difference!
Best of luck with your new addition

I have a concern about my pups vaccinations: when we picked him up at 8 weeks old, our breeder told us his first vaccination certificate had not come back from the vets and that she would post it onto us..I was given a rceipt for our pup and on the back was written 2nd vac due when puppy is 12 weeks old..
She told me that if my vet hadn't got the same vaccine as her vet then I should take Oscar
back to her vet for the 2nd injection, as it's a good 4 hr round trip I was hoping that my vet would have the same vaccine..I didn't fancy driving all that way with a frightened pup in the car on my own..
In the meantime I still hadn't received the first vaccination certificate so I phoned her and she said she would post it on, she told me that his first injection was on the 19th Dec against distemper, canine viral hepititis, leptospirosis and Parvo..(Eurican)..DHPPLI
I telephoned our local vet and when I went to see him he gave Oscar an injection Nobivac DHPPLI , thats a week ago now and i'm so looking forward to taking Oscar out in a weeks time. My main concern is : has there been too long between his first injection and the second one, because the two injections are different 'makes' will he still be ok..I want to make sure he's absolutely covered..I'm still waiting for the certificate from the breeder (5 weeks now) I'm hoping to start puppy training classes too and wonder if they will need to see the two certificates..(I'm quite sure she did have him vaccinated as she even gave me the batch number) I might phone her vet to see if he will send me a copy of the certificate.. Also can you 'overdose' a dog with these vaccinations, say in the worst senario Oscar had to have another injection from my vet to gain proof of him having two lots..Thats if i can't get the first certificate or a copy of it from the breeders vet..
Regards
Sandy :) :) xx
Hi Sandy, if you look in search under vaccines there are a lot of useful links. Firstly Eurican is made by Merial & Nobivac are made by Intervet. Merials protocol is pups first at 8wks & then another at 12wks Nobivac is very similar, but they say second vacc can be given at 10wks or later.
There is absolutely no evidence to show that giving another vacc will give him more immunity [$ yes you can over vaccinate. Your vet should know what he`s doing & all evidence suggests that the Novibac is a *safer vacc*. In fact as far as I`m concerned anythings better than Merials vaccines! Oscar doesn`t need any more vaccines, so try & not worry & get your vet to write a ]etter to confirm he`s been vaccinated.

Thanks for your help Christine..It's so worrying when you read of all the things that can happen to pup-s from either mixing with other 'unwell' dogs or catching nasty bugs etc etc.. I can remember feeling like this with my first baby and someone with a cold went anywhere near it!!!
When your a novice in these matters you have to trust what people tell you, when I rang the vet the receptionist said that you could overdose and when we went to see the vet I'm sure he said you couldn't! It was quite a visit when we saw him, with Oscar trying to eat the vet as he looked at all Oscars bits and pieces, trying to make sure pup didn't fall off the table and watch my son who was trying very hard to help us all in all of this.. I find it much easier asking questions here on CD as I can sit and digest the answers..As long as he is covered with having the two vaccines albeit different types then I don't want Oscar to have a third..
Thanks again
Regards Sandy xx :)
Hi Sandy, the great thing about the internet tho is you don`t have to take anybody`s word for things, you can look up all the info on the net! :) Intervet & Merial have web sites & the best thing you can do is read up on all the info you can & then I`m afraid you have to make you own decisions. The best I can do on here is go by what I`ve learned from experience & the info I have from books & the net & pass it on. The book I gave you the info from is called *Compendium of Data Sheets for Veterinary Products 2001-2002.* If you type it into your search engine they have a website that tells you about it. The BVSA also has a website as do loads of others & we have to seperate the wheat from the chaff so to speak!!!! :) :) :) :)
I know it`s not easy & the worrying can drive you mad sometimes but we were all novices once & a lot of the time I still am!!!!!! :) Have a great time with Oscar :)
