Why do dogs eat grass
- By Lexy [gb] Date 10.05.13 18:25 UTC
because it is a natural medicine...

Does that mean then that my 11month GR isn't feeling too good, she's running around and seems fine but keeps munching on grass
- By Brainless [gb] Date 10.05.13 18:34 UTC
Mine are all doing it, I expect the new grass tastes nice as none of them are being sick.

> new grass tastes

young grass is much sweeter than older grass & very soon the sugars will be at their highest...

Sometimes when they're thirsty and there's dew on the grass, they like it for that reason.

My GRs enjoyed grass at all times. One of them was quite selective as to which grass. As they got old I had to be careful how much I let them eat as they would throw up, but when they were young, they just enjoyed munching away with no problems

Spring has sprung, the grass is ris...
and everyone's dogs seem to enjoy nibbling it at this time of year. Let them graze :)

Mine usually eat grass in the morning when tums are empty. Dogs have a very acidic stomach and this helps them I believe.

We live very close to the south downs and our dogs love to eat various grasses and herbs which they can spend quiet some time looking for the right ones.
At the moment my old lady (almost 13 ) is eating Goose grass / Cleavers every day. She is never sick and I am sure she knows what she is doing, I would not stop her either.
The other dogs hunt around the field finding the "right poo" to eat from our donkeys, they love the softer almost sloppy ones.
Later in the summer they will line up along a bramble bush all looking for blackberries which they pick for themselves.
These types of foraging are natural and healthy.

My last two dogs adored blackberries and raspberries. One of them would sniff each one to check for ripeness and would only eat those that were just right. She also checked the crab apples each day sniffing until finding one that was very ripe and edible (to her tastes). She was also very keen on other animals poo liking rabbit, but only certain pellets, and the poo from cows out on spring grass! When I had some sheep, they just didn't munch and munch at the grass, but would select different plants, eat those for a few bites, then move on to other plants or types of grass.

My dogs love cleavers too. I am always interested in what they like to eat and often look up to see what the herbal 'value' of it is. They also like to nibble on my cistus bushes (rock rose) which I discovered has anti inflammaory properties. They always graze on standard grass too but are never sick with it. If they munch my bamboo they do it because they plan on throwing up LOL.

Didn't know that Goosegrass was also known as Cleavers & having just looked it up see that it's edible, cooked or fried with butter! Think I'll leave it for the dogs who love it.

My Sal adores grass especially this time of year.

Oh I don't know, it sounds kind of nice cooked, esp fried in butter. Might make a change from sprouts LOL
