Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Puppy nervous of other dogs

My puppy is just over 9 weeks old and I find she is a bit nervous of other dogs. My previous puppies have always been outgoing and loved to meet other dogs so I am not sure the best way to handle this. Obviously I don't want to make the situation worse and end up with a major problem so I am thinking it would be best to tackle it before she gets much older.

She is fine with my dogs and has met a couple of other family dogs. one she was fine with, the other she was very uncomfortable around and kept growling and barking at it. Should say she met these dogs at different times and different places not together. we went to a local pet shop the other day and there was a Lhasa apso in full coat there and she was very worried about that and kept barking at him. She wouldn't get near enough to sniff to see he was a dog.

I am looking for ideas about how to handle these encounters when she seems nervous to help her learn there is nothing to be worried about. Thanks

I'd be very cautious of letting her get close to strange dogs when she's too young to be fully vaccinated; when she's old enough she might well be braver.

find some nice friendly and vaccinated dogs that she can meet when she's on the floor but able to get away... try and be calm... you say your pup didn't get close enough to sniff... why is she on the floor?  Until fully vaccinated carry your pet around, but don't put her in danger of picking up bugs...

Take her to a good dog training school so she gets to see lots of other dogs but in a controlled environment.

Get her out as much as possible but don't force her to say hello to other dogs! She is worried so needs to build her confidence with nice dogs!

Try not to react when she barks at other dogs but praise her when she's being brave and quiet.

Find a good puppy class where she can meet different breeds in a controlled way - not one of those vet parties where they just let them run loose everywhere!

Your puppy is small so i think its nervous from other dog. Every dog has different behavior so my German Shepherd puppy also have same problem but after some time he will fine and now never nervous from other dogs, he is 1 year old now.

Well, you will make the situation worse if you try railroading her into something that she is not ready for.

She has made it quite clear.  Growling is the only way she can tell you how uncomfortable she is.

She is only a baby, don't make her end up with fear aggression, she will end up biting if you don't listen to her warning you.  You need someone with experience to help you slow down and stop trying to rush things.  Slowly, slowly does it.  :-)
