Well 6 of the pups seems to be holding their own at the moment, still feeding well and don't look as if they are dehydrating.

My smallest one is the one giving me cause for concern, whereas the other 6 are gaining weight very slightly, he is fluctuating gaining a little and then losing a little. I am topping him up between feeds with a little glucose, salt and water to keep him hydrated. But he is worrying me.

Any ideas would be gratefully received, would really like to give him a little live yoghurt, but I wonder if anyone has ever given this to pups so young, they are now 12 days?

id top him up with nutridrops !!ive only used bottles for extra at that age, if you keep him going for a while longer once you can give him solids hed probably catch up
pedigree do a new milk that mixes like a yoghurt a touch, its high in fat, might be worth trying that asap, i bought some from my rep with my second litter, they seemed to like it, worth a try :)

Hi Lady/D, I had to wean a litter of pups that age so don`t see why you couldn`t try it. I was giving them lightly scramled egg with the yoghurt. Dizzy`s idea seems good too. It was because the dam had eclampsia & the puppy milk went straight thru them so had no choice but to wean them.

hi im no expert but i read(the book of the bitch i think) that condensed milk and a little water makes a good substitute for mums milk....:)

Ive heard evaporated milk with water (one part milk to two parts water) is like bitches milk my friend Jan has reared many an orphan litter on that and swears by it jayne ill email her number to you she wont mind you phoning her.

Yes Matty & Bettyboo of course, I gave them that as well just remembered when you mentioned it! I think I added an egg yolk to it as well & I made a sloppy mush mixed with farleys rusks or baby rice. I used to give them pureed rice pudding made with it & remembering the mess everywhere!!!!!!! :)
Here is a recipe from Dr Pitcairns book for puppies.
1 cup half & half (milk & cream)
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon protein powder
3/4 teaspoon bonemeal(or 500 milligrams calcium)
1-2 days worth of dog vitamins(adult dosage),powdered or crushed.
Mix ingredients well & warm to body temp.
This recipeis for orphaned pups & is very close to the make up of the bitches milk.

If their eyes are open I would get them onto lapping from a dish. I always start with a little soaked puppy food mixed with puppy milk into a gruel. I find they splutter and chole on neat puppy milk.

Glad to hear the pups are doing well, theres always one little tiddly bug that worries you to death though...I top up with carnation cream..4 parts cream to one part boiled water..they love it..you 'll probably get the others going off mums milk if they smell it.Yoghurt is great for them too.

Friend of mine hand raised a litter of Cockers on Pedigree milk as dam wouldn't feed the, she thinks it's brilliant stuff. So I'd try that, high fat content. At 2 weeks old, with my weany one, I started her on some of the Pedigee weaning food and it helped bring her along a bit more. She was still smaller than the others but by god, was she feisty, I think thats what helped her stay on this planet. :)

Hiya - i've also used the evap milk method in book of the bitch - only supplemented one of mine on it - she loved it, they all like it now - i give them it when they haven't put any weight on. The littlun has almost caught up but then i am weaning them - on 3 meals a day now, ebbie just doesn't seem interested in feeding them all day, she does at night though so they are still getting some from mum.

Well little one worried me sick last night and this morning, he lost 1/4 oz overnight, so put him on intensive supplementary feeding today (as he appeared to be dehydrating I mixed goats milk, evap, glucose and water a mixture I have used before for dehydrating pups) and joy he has gained 1/2 oz today.

So fingerscrossed everyone, he is definitely a fighter.

The other pups are gaining weight nicely now and the diarrohea has stopped, but seem to have greeny yellow firmish motions, do you think this is the antibiotics. Only time I have seen greeny poo's is when pups are not doing well and thse are now.

ps antibiotics can do this in dogs as well as humans. not sure about pups as i have never needed to give anitibiotics to them. and i hope i never will.

Oh thats great news Lady D! :) I`ve been told goats milk is v good for pups/dogs but I`ve never managed to get hold of any. Quite a number of people suggested it to me but I forgot about it. It could be the A/biotics, don`t really know.
