hi can anyone tell me what is required of dog and owner to do the good citizen test so i can get training in now before outdoor champ shows
this of course is to do the bronze test

Not a lot. :) A one minute stay with owner 5 metres away, in any position but must stay in the position you started in (down, sit or stand), lead stays on dog. Walking without pulling on lead including around other dogs, meeting a person that the owner greets, without dog jumping up. Owner examining dog -eyes, ears, teeth, paws etc. Owner grooming. Owner taking collar and lead off and putting back on.  Owner taking dog off lead, playing and recalling dog -not formal recall. Walking through door or gate without dog pulling ahead. Owner answering a few very basic questions. Oh and dog must have ID disc on, you must carry poo bag. No treats to be used during test, no headcollar.

You can find all the tests described here: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/3691

When we did ours (which was a while back now and they're always tweaking things) we were allowed to treat between exercises, but not to use the food as lures during the exercises. So it could be in a pocket while you did the lead walking for example, and after you'd done that and the examiner was getting ready for the next thing, you could pop a little treat. I always panic about the questions even though they are mostly just common sense, but don't worry, if your mind goes blank the examiner is supposed to phrase the questions in an obvious way to bring out the answers, they aren't trying to trap you!

All the tests are detailed on the KC website, so are easy to check if you forget something.

I think the distance you need to be away from your dog during the Bronze Stay exercise is actually 5 paces and not 5 metre - 15 foot.  Or it was when I did mine for 6 different dogs over 10 years!

Correct -stupid way to define it really!

(I did 20 dogs over 15 years myself.)

well hurray he passed  she is only young and very excitable but we practiced hard
One of the reasons i took her was .At 11 months old i took her to dublin  earlier this year to an international show they had along with a 4 year old who has a cacib  so was hoping he would maybe get his 2nd
she had to go in junior dog as there puppy classes are only to 9 months  NOT GOOD NEWS really as she went and won the green star!!! wish i had known beforehand  BUT DO NOW!!
So now once she is out of junior  and yearling  she has to go in LIMIT  so i thought a class   she could  go in  would be able to go in would be able to go in would be good good citz
looking at future schedules for this summer HEY!!! no G/C
ARE THEY CUTTING DOWN ON THEM ????  seems i cant win

Well done for passing!!

There have never been many shows with the GC classes. Originally it was only Crufts, then a handfull of shows added them as well. I can't think of many; there's usually WELKS, Windsor, Driffield and LKA and Boston, sure somebody will think of others but those are the only ones I can think of offhand.

Well done! Yes they're not very popular classes as yet, also you take the risk of the judge not realising it's a 'proper' show class and either disregarding your dog in the challenge, or picking the dog with the fastest sit or something. Hasn't happened to me yet, but I've heard stories!

City of Birmingham had GC classes last year.

It's not that long since the KC sent out a press release telling judges these classes must be judged as any other class, but yes, some will not see them as important. In one of my breeds I will enter the class and it's never been a problem, in the otehr I was told by my mentor to stop doing it as it typically is only the dogs not good enough to not do anything in the other classes that will be entered, so most judges will see it as a class of failures. My mentor will therefore only show Champions in it.

do you mean she will only show shch in g/c or breed class?
- By Goldmali Date 13.05.13 14:47 UTC
If she enters GC she'll only enter a Champion as that dog has nothing to prove.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.05.13 16:35 UTC
It's a handy class to enter if you want to enter two dogs who only qualify for Open.
