Hi all ,
My Newf has been to the river two days running.I' not sure if there is any connection but this after noon she seems to have trouble weeing. She has been going outside a small amount, coming straight back in and going on her paper ( small trickle) she then hasnt been making it more than a meter without going ~ tiny tiny wee's.It seems like a urinary infection.Firstly could it be related to the river ? ( two different rivers) secondly , allthough surgery is closed , should i phone the emergency vets??
How worried should i be ?? ( VERY at the moment!!)

Hi Zoe, it could a couple of things. If she`s not due to come in heat or is in already, it could be a urinary infection. I would ring the vet cos if it is infection she will be very uncomfortable over the w/end & it could also get a lot worse.

PS take a sample of her urine with you.

dont think it could be a season , she's only 14 weeks old.She has only been doing this for the past helf hour .. and only seems to do it infront of me.
We're going to watch her for the next half hr or so and if it keeps up we'll call the emergency vet.
She seems really happy in herself and is drinking ok etc.
She does keep looking at me while she does it , could it be a marking thing ?maybe she can sense my cycle !!

Sounds very like our pup at about that age - she had a urinary infection (cystitis). Try to get a sample, put it into a clean container and take her to the vets. Antiobiotics cleared it up very quickly. Don't know if it is an emergency tho'.

Our's goes in the stream a lot - hadn't thought that that might have been the cause :)

I called the vet , he said to keep an eye on her and bring her in Monday. Why do they have to get these things of a weekend !! im so worried i have butterflys !!

A friend gave me something to collect a sample - it is a plastic thingy that is used to sample milk at the dairy. Anyway it is a bit like a small soup ladle and you just slip it underneath when she squats :) So if you have any old soup ladles handy ............ :)

Daisy

Meant to say - make sure that you take a fresh sample to the vets - they are no use if they are more than an hour old or so.

My parents always used a small saucer from a plant pot with their diabetic dog.

Hi Zoe, one of my adult girls had cystitis & it does clear up quickly with a/biotics :) These thing always happen at w/ends & holidays as well!!! At least he`s put your mind at rest but keep an eye on her like he said & if she gets a temp or you see blood give him another ring. If you`ve got any cranberry tabs or juice you could give her them as a temp. measure till Monday. Like us, it`s supposed to be good for dogs as well.
Christine, Spain.
PS. Don`t worry!! :)

When I had cystitis (blimey, it hurts :() a nurse recommended barley water. Buy some pearl barley (health food shop?), put it in a (clean) stocking, cover it with boiling water and soak it. When cool remove the stocking and squeeze out the liquid from the barley. Drink the liquid (barley water).

It works. :)

My female JRT had the same thing a week after she was spayed and yes, you guessed it, at a weekend. I also phoned the emergency vet and was told the same as you, watch her and take her to the vet on Monday. She also said to encourage her to drink plenty. We gave her ice cubes which she loves (thinks they are a treat!) and I worried all weekend but got her to the vet on Monday and she was put on antibiotics and a different dog within 24 hours!

Didn't think to try the cranberry juice with her but it sure does help me when I have had it! Wish I had thought of it though - could have made her cranberry ice cubes! Feel so sorry for you little one - it really is miserable.

Hope she is soon on the mend.
