My sons dog had her first litter 6 months ago, pups were born by section because the labour seemed to have gone on a bit too long and she wasnt getting anywhere. While he was at crufts showing his other 2 girls this little girl went back to her breeder for a holiday because she was in season and wasnt being shown anyway. All was well until yesterday evening he noticed that she a little thick around her waist. He called the breeder who told him she was nowhere near the boys and when he asked if she was in charge of the dogs the whole time she said actually no,my friend had them for 2 days as she had had an emergency. My son has booked her in at the vets today,he is very upset.she has done very well in the showring and obviously doesnt want her spayed but wants whats best for her too,if im honest this little dog is the apple of his eye.If she is pregnant the pups will be the same breed as her and would be the same father used with the alst litter as the breeder only has one sire Any advice on what to do  appreciated.

Could she be having a phantom?

I would get her the injection to abort/reabsorb the pups if she is pregnant if it was me, it can be given up to 42 days post mating, the risk of the uterus rupturing is too high this soon after a c/section.

Hope it is just a phantom.

My son is just back from the vets and he says although she has got a rounded tummy he cant feel anything,if she was pregnant she would be approx just over 4 weeks. Now my son is worried the vet may have got it wrong,is that possible? The vet was convinced enough not to offer the mis mate injection.

I'd be wanting a scan to completely rule out done by an experienced scanner, the Alizin [sp] jab can be given whether pregnancy confirmed or not, usually given at the end of a season when an OOPs mating has been witnessed or up to 42 days if pregnancy was suspected/confirmed and not in the bitches best interest to continue, this modern drug doesn't mess with future seasons.

I hope the person she stayed with is paying for the vet costs, they knew she was in season and they had an intact male[hopefully only the one and no outside dog got at her]so should have been much more careful especially with someone elses dog.

If it is less than 6 weeks since a possible mating then she can still be given the Alizin injection to terminate the pregnancy.

A scan from a competent vet should be able to determine a pregnancy, and if pregnant then administer the Alizin and she will absorb or abort depending on how far she has gone.

It will be a little unpleasant for you and uncomfortable for her, but better than rearing an unwanted litter, especially so soon after the last.
