Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / another puppy question - introducing pup to existing dog
- By ceejay Date 08.04.13 12:07 UTC
Just want to pick your brains before tomorrow because I had had various advice.  My breeder says hold the pup in your hands and let the existing dog come to sniff, or put him in the crate and leave the other dog to have a sniff.  Others have said on no account introduce the pup on the dog's home territory - get them to meet outside the home to begin with, yet another opinion said to take my dog in the car to pick up the pup -( to me that is bringing the pup into the existing territory again).  Interested to know what other people have done.  I have the new crate etc in the house - it has been set up for weeks now.

Up to now we've always given the new puppy time to explore our garden before bringing the other dog/s out on leads, one at a time, to allow them the sniff the puppy under control.

We collect a new pup in a couple of weeks and might take Daisy in the car when we go, so that they can meet on the breeder's ground (she's already been there once and met the pup's mum and the other dogs) then the pup would only have to face meeting Piggy in a strange place.

My breeder says hold the pup in your hands and let the existing dog come to sniff, or put him in the crate and leave the other dog to have a sniff.

Both of that sounds dodgy to me as the puppy will effectively be trapped, totally unable to get away should he feel scared for whatever reason. It's not long ago somebody came on here and said they'd introduced their new pup to their existing dog by holding it for the adult to sniff, and they got bitten badly as a result when the pup freaked out. And in a crate the pup will be just as trapped. If you're not sure of your adult dog, outdoors is definitely best. Here, I know my dogs will all be fine with pups so I simply put the pup straight on the floor and let them get on with it, under supervision.

I think it depends how territorial your existing dog is, I introduced 2 older pups to my lab on home turf, just pretty much walked them through the front door.  And my springer I brought in a cage straight into the house and let the beagle have a good sniff but I was always confident about the way my existing dog would react, if I were dubious I would be aiming for neutral territory or in the garden with the existing dog on lead perhaps.  I certainly would never have walked another dog straight in to my collie.  I do think the cage is good, especially if you can cover part up so pup feels safe in there and can come out in their own time

I introduced a puppy when the exististing dog was only 13months, so still playful and perhaps not so territorial as an older dog, also both dogs were the same breed.
I took the puppy from the car into the garden for a sniff round and a pee, then bought out the older dog on a lead and let the puppy approach. I knew my older dog was very easy going and had been quite happy for other people's dogs to come into the house and garden. Everything went well and it was just a matter of getting the older dog to be more gentle with the puppy. The only signs of a problem was over food when the puppy stuck her head into the older dogs bowl and got told off. Once was enough, she never tried again.

I must admit that was my original plan to take the pup straight out of the car into the garden to relieve hisself and then take Meg up the garden to meet him.  She has never minded another dog coming on to her territory and she has always been very tolerant of pups when she has met them.

I like your original plan...its what I always do

I am glad I did the garden plan.  I took the pup into the garden and let him have a little explore around first.  Then brought Meg out on the lead - she got quite excited but then really lost interest in the pup.  Pup was frightened and ran off to hide - came back to hide around our feet and peep out at Meg.  Eventually he came out to have a sniff.  Meg is a bit miffed at having someone else on her tail but she has just given a little warning growl now and then and pup is respecting her space - I expect a few more sparks before the pup is much older as he gets a bit more venturesome but Meg doesn't seem too worried about the pup at the moment.

Sounds like a good meeting. Meg has said "watch it young man" and pup has listened and paid heed.
