Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / how do you know if the breeder is right
- By allisongy30 [gb] Date 02.04.13 14:04 UTC
Hi there i have been researching breeders for ages now hoping that most breeders out there are genuine but know there are some out there just out for the money. I was contacted yesterday for a call back puppy from a home due to their other dog not taking to the puppy and as i was on her waiting list for a litter she emailed me to see if i was interested. I am going to view pup tomorrow she says pup was 8 weeks 29th march 2013 KC registered etc but whne i have searched for the reg of puppys i couldnt find anything on spaniels at all.

She breeds 2 types of pedagrees and im just wondering if anyone knows or has heard about this breeder just so i can feel alittle more reassured on having the puppy if i like her etc,

Don't really understand what you mean by this -what were you searching for, and where?

A good breeder will ask you lots of questions. Those not in it for money will be very active within their breed, either going to shows or working their dogs. Breeding a litter will be very low on their list of priorities as everything else comes first, and they only breed a litter when they want a pup to keep for themselves.  This is often once a year at MOST. Their dogs will be health tested and they should either be able to show you certificates as proof, or if it is a breed where the KC will record the results, you should find results online in the KC health test results finder. The breeder will sell the puppies endorsed not for breeding, and you will be asked to sign a contract.

There is nowhere where you will see information of pups until the BRS ( a writtent no internet) booklet comes out but that is done every quarter so will be a while before it shows for the litter.

Well, the first thing that strikes me as odd about this situation is that the original owner of the new puppy could hardly have known in such a very short space of time that their existing dog was not going to get on with the new puppy.  How long had the puppy been in its first home before it was taken back to the breeder?  It takes time to introduce and settle a pup with existing pets.

I feel the same as Megslegs. I bought a puppy when the existing dog was 13 months old and she was not amused. It took a week or two before she decided it was her new best friend.

Doesn't really matter though if the previous buyer was rubbish, even good breeders can get them at times and it is in this one's favour that they took the pup back.

Isn't it possible to see litter details on mate select under the health test section if you know the dam/sires reg. name?
- By Goldmali Date 02.04.13 16:12 UTC
I don't know how it works in breeds that have DNA tests and/or where litters are screened, but when I looked at Mate Select earlier today, all it says for my main breed is number of pups sired and number of litters, nothing else for offspring other than health results. No dates of birth etc. Even if it does for some breeds though, they are slow to update. The reason I was checking earlier was to see if my latest eye test results from the 16th of March had been added yet, and they have not.

Certainly all spaniels should have some health tests so should be listed for the poster to see under the health test result finder on the eh KC website.

So to OP please ask for the parents names and input those details into the tool to check they have been health tested.  I would expect to see eye test result, Hip scores and also probably some DNA test results.

On the KC website you will be able to find which tests are required and recommended for the breed and only buy from breeders who at the very least do the required tests, but preferably the recommended ones too.

I would also expect a decent breeder to be a member of one or more breed clubs and actively involved with working and or showing their dogs, the breeding should be part of this interest not their prime involvement in their breed..

I think all you can do is get parents results, though if there re hereditary clear DNA results the date shown is the pups DOB.

> I am going to view pup tomorrow she says pup was 8 weeks 29th march 2013

So this pup has already been to one home & isnt yet 9 weeks..poor thing.

As others have said, you will not find anywhere to check if the puppy is KC registered. At least when looking on the KC 'Find A Puppy' site the pups arent advertised until registered.

If the pup is KC registered, the OP could contact the KC and ask if (a) the bitch has this litter recorded on her details and/or (b) if she knows the pup's KC name, ask the KC to verify the details

As the pup is being viewed by you tomorrow all will become clear, the KC transfer of ownership certificate with pups DOB and breeders name and address on it should also be there for you to view hopefully it was returned with the pup.

If the new owners have already sent it off for transfer into their names I would wait for its return prior to taking the pup (if you like her) just to make sure that all is above board. :-)

Everything will become clear tomorrow.

Knowing how easily the sight of a puppy sways many people, I would always advise doing all the checks before a cuddly pup or convincing patter, from am experienced but not the best kind of breeder, could cloud my judgement.

If it's a cocker they will need DNA tests for PRA and FN.
