I have an odd topic!!! My golden retriever loves to eat rocks!! She will come in from her morning outing, and either have them held in her mouth, or throw up within about 10 minutes, and there are a few rocks in her vomit!!! Anyone know if she is missing somethin in her diet??? We feed her strictly purina or Iams dry dog food, plenty of water, and an occasional rawhide! Thanks for any help!!!

Hi
I don't think theres anything missing in her diet but I would try to discourage this behaviour.A friend of mines staff used to do this and he ended up having 3 operations to remove stones from his stomach and the 3rd time the vet advised having him PTS .

It's a very bad habit. Stone carrying can also badly wear down and damage teeth which can be painful and costly. Try to encourage her to carry a ball or another type of toy to distract her from picking up stones. Otherwise use a basket type muzzle.

Ooooo that's really scary! My 11wk Munster kept bringing in stones - at first I would take them from him or swap them for a treat - but that didn't work - he was still bringing them in for the attention or a treat. I've been ignoring him now but keeping a close eye on him and I play with something then he drops stone and comes over and I pick up stone when he's not looking.
I didn't think he might actually try and swallow them :(
