Can anyone pls answer my questions?
If a lurcher is any breed crossed with a greyhound, is a whippet cross a lurcher as well?
And am i right in thinking a long dog is a cross between two sighthounds?
AND (!) can anyone pls explain how terriers and longdogs work together?
Hope someone can help, i am just intrested!
thanks

A friend of mine had a terrier and a lurcher...they worked by the terrier flushing prey out of the hedges, and the lurcher giving chase and catching them. They made a great team!

"Lurcher" was originally (as far as I can discover) used to describe a dog which was a cross between a greyhound and a collie, used by poachers for catching hares and rabbits (1668).

Hi,
Just to clarify,
a lurcher is any sighthound (grey, whippet, borzoi, afghan, wolfhound, deerhound, etc) crossed with a pastoral breed, or some types of terrier.
so a whippet cross collie is a lurcher.
a sighthound cross sighthound is a longdog.

spot on Em :)
Usually the terrier bolts the quarry (fox etc) then the lurcher catches it out in the open as it runs. Likewise terriers are good at bushing & getting in the scrub, furze and covert & pushing the quarry out for the lurcher to catch. Thats how we do it here anyway!
