If I contact a breeder and they put me on a waiting list, is it ok to contact other breeders and enquire about litters they may be having? I have stipulated a specific sex and colour I would like and the litter I have been placed on the waiting list for is going to be a mixed colour litter. Im not sure how likely it is that I will get a puppy from this litter and I know responsible breeders only breed from their bitches at most once a year.

I hope someone can answer me. Thank you.

Get on as many waiting lists as you can, but when you get a puppy be sure to cancel the others (or you'll be really unpopular!).

....... and it is also polite to mention to other breeders that you are on various waiting lists and to notify everyone once it has been confirmed that you can have a puppy. Some people wait until they have a certain number of potential buyers on their list to breed a litter so they know they have homes lined up with people they like.

I often invite potential purchasers to visit even if I am not planning a litter for a year or so, so I can be sure that they aren't scared of my breed and that I think they will be able to handle them - as well as so they can make sure it is really the breed they want etc etc.

I would get on as many as possible!
Last summer I was put on the waiting list of breeder as soon as her litter was born, advised to ring bank in 2 weeks which I did to be told she was busy with a viewing ring back later, this I did & she had 3 pups left and 10 people wanting them ! I may or may not get a pup,she would ring me back in 2 days , I felt I was given the run around so I checked breeders further afield, found one who had a litter just born and invited me up in 2 weeks when they were a tad older but would put me on the list for sure pending she & I got along OK (when I passed her inspection I think!)
I duly went on best behaviour 2 weeks later and had my pick of the remaining pups , she was having potential owners in date order of when they had rung to make it fair.
I did cancel myself on all list sbut one that I forgot and felt awful when they emailed me to see if I was still looking.

the first breeder to this day has still not telephoned so her 2 days has now been 4 months!

Good Luck!

When we were looking for a pup we were told by a breeder that yes we would be on the list but obviously it would depend on how many pups were born . Which is fair enough .
He promised to let us know the day pups were born so we would know whether or not we could have one . We never heard off him so presumed that we were out of luck so to say .
Weeks later he rang to say he had a pup that had had its tail docked as it had a screw tail and we could have it for half price !! The cheek!
He had probably rang around everyone trying to sell this pup because of its tai l. I felt quite angry that he hadnt bothered to contact us about the litter only when he couldnt sell this little one !!!
