Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Progesterone level 12.4 nmol when mated
- By RubyC Date 25.02.13 09:19 UTC
Hi everyone

My bitch was blood tested on Thursday and I posted it to IDEXX.  The result of the blood test on Thursday was 12.4 nmol which meant that she hadnt ovulated.  My young dog who hasnt mated a bitch before mated her on Thursday which was day 11 but I havent been able to get another mating since.  There was a 15 minute tie on Thursday but the mating was too early.  What are the chances of a litter if I cant get another mating between the pair?  Have been trying over the weekend.  Young dog stops trying to mate when anyone tries to help him.  Both dog and bitch are health tested and Im a reputable breeder.  Thanks.

the sperm can live for 5-6 days and if your girl doubles each day ,by day 5 she would/could be 24 nmol if i worked that out propley... time will tell as iv forgot what it is at ovulation??.

Why has the mating failed? Is it lack of interest or co operation from either dog? The early mating may be because he was inexperienced or it may be she was ready and now gone over, reading threads on here the blood tests are not foolproof despite how much they cost.

Hi Rhodach.  Mating has failed because my young dog is inexperienced.  His mum did really well for me at shows and his dad is a champion.  He comes from lovely bloodlines.  He is very keen and a few times he has tried to mate he thinks he is in the bitch when he is not and he becomes fully swollen.  Unfortunately he wont let anyone help him.  We were lucky enough to get a tie on day 11 but no luck since.

Hi White Lily.  The progesterone level approximately doubles every other day.  Ovulation occurs when the reading is in the high teens.

i wouldnt worry to much yet only let them be together for afew mins in a morning after her 1st outside wthe you there :) shes got afew days to go yet it might of just been lucky that and nothing to do with smell so he will prob get her again when the time is right.?!

You can work with helping the bitch into position instead of handling the dog.

If you spread your hand in her groin, fingers around her vulva, you can make sure it is in the right place for the dog to get his aim right, without touching him.

You will also know for sure if he is in and can gently push the bitch toward him at the critical moment, so he is less likely to tie himself outside.

Of course now that initial over keenness has been satisfied he may just be waiting for the right time.

Hallo. My girls have been breed 3 times each.
Got puppies on last the  try  when breed on the  day of ovulation.
On the morning of ovulation the progesterone value was around 12 nnml.
Puppies born  on day 64 and 63 counting ovulation day  as "day 0".
Now I am  waiting to se if this strategy will pay off again. Scanning next week will tell.

Keeping fingers crossed that both you and I will have puppies!!

Mrsnewfie, there were quite a lot of drips of blood came from my girl twelve and thirteen days after the mating so Im not really expecting my girl to have puppies.  That is great news that your girl is pregnant.  Hope all goes well!

I have had a bitch mated around day 15 continue to bleed for a solid month from the start of the season and go on to produce a trouble free litter.

The season will continue as it was going to, regardless of whether they were mated.

This bitches previous season had also gone on for a full month.

Thanks white lilly! It sure is!!

RubyC:  Thanks! yes, really good news!!

About your girl:
Have you taken her to the vet?  I have heard of a case of spot -bleeding during  pregnancy  where it turned out to be an infection.
Girl was put on antibiotics, bleeding stopped and she delivered 5 healthy puppies right on time.

Hoping this is the case with your girl!! keep us opdated!!

Thank you everyone for your advice.  Unfortunately my girl took a twisted stomach last night and went through an emergency operation so sadly no pups.  She was also spayed.  After operation the vet confirmed that she had been in pup.  Sadly it wasnt meant to be.  Have fingers crossed now that my girl pulls through.
