Hi
I'm hoping that JeanSW sees this post.
Awhile ago, another post requested some good informative books to read about breeding. Jean posted a title of a book which i bought from Amazon. I lent this book out and now cannot get it back so i'm hoping that Jean may be able to help me with the title.
It was an old fashioned book, with photo's on the front and very graphic photots on presentation inside. It was the best book on breeding i have ever read! Looked through Amazon under the heading 'dog breeding' cannot find it anywhere.
I would really appreciate Jeans help.
Thank you.

It's not "The Whelping and Rearing of Puppies" is it by Muriel Lee? :)
- By Eden2 [gb] Date 17.02.13 16:44 UTC
Thanks , but that dosen't ring a bell.
- By Bordaquest [gb] Date 17.02.13 16:48 UTC
Ok. No worries. I'll be intrigued to find out what it is then, as the above one is good too :)
- By Eden2 [gb] Date 17.02.13 16:49 UTC
Maybe i'll try this one as well. Where can you buy it? Amazon?
- By Madhatter [gb] Date 17.02.13 16:49 UTC
Was it Book of the Bitch, J.M. Evans, Kay White
- By Eden2 [gb] Date 17.02.13 16:52 UTC
Thank you - but i have it. Read it like a bible when one of mine is pregnant.

I think it might be Dog Breeding for Professionals by Herbert Richards - JeanSW has mentioned it before...
- By Eden2 [gb] Date 17.02.13 17:51 UTC
Thats it! Great book. Thank you very much everyone.

Several used copies on Amazon at around 46p, plus P&P.
That's if you all haven't bought them up!
- By suejaw Date 17.02.13 22:13 UTC
Well just gone on and the cheapest 2nd hand is coming in at £8 plus p&p, the cost for new is astronomical!
- By suejaw Date 17.02.13 22:18 UTC
Ah just got the 26p one, lol it's overall cost is £3.06 from the US including postage.. I best not get charged for import tax!!!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.02.13 22:28 UTC
its great when you get a bargin cant wait to get mine now a good read while im puppy watching :)
- By Eden2 [gb] Date 18.02.13 15:40 UTC
I've got one too! I can remember JeanSW saying it was a good book. When i bought it first time around, the photo's on the cover and inside were very graphic, but brilliant. It's very old fashioned, and alot of it is what breeders already know, but you can never read enough.
- By ginjaninja [gb] Date 18.02.13 17:09 UTC
Fantastic advice as usual.  I've just ordered a copy - I've got the Book of the Bitch, but I'd like to read more as I slowly educate my way towards one day breeding.

No - not expensive enough I think :)

Has this book been re-printed at all or is it still the 1976 book? Great book :-( brill if you can get it under a tenner!
- By Jan bending Date 19.02.13 10:23 UTC
Must be Muriel Lee's book. I have a copy, bought on Amazon, and yes, it is pretty graphic and some of the practices described seem a tad 'odd' by our standards today but it is an excellent book.
- By cutewolf [gb] Date 21.02.13 15:06 UTC
Does anyone know of any good dog breeding books that are focussed on the science/theory rather than the practical?
- By Jan bending Date 22.02.13 17:38 UTC
The Technique Of Breeding Better Dogs by Dr Dieter Fleig is excellent. I've had my copy for years but I'm sure it is still in print.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 22.02.13 18:01 UTC
mine came today so when i get chance il be looking at it as long as i can stay awake lol with having 17day old pups,

>brill if you can get it under a tenner

I first bought the book when it was a totally new release in the 70's.  My first Toy Poodle litter!

To this day, I have never read a book that comes near it for expertise on malpresentations.  I would pay £30 if that was the price.

I have saved many a pup thanks to this book.  It may be "old" in as much as we didn't have todays balanced feeds.  But giving birth is the same as it was then.  :-)

I have to say that Muriel Lee's book left me cold.  There wasn't anything new in it.
- By Jan bending Date 07.03.13 09:18 UTC
Just realised that I was talking about the wrong book. I have Muriel Lee 's book . It's okay, an easy read and in a good format. The book I meant is Dog Breeding for Professionals by Dr Herbert Richards. I have a 1978 edition. It is very graphic and as I said, we would be alarmed by some of the practices. There is even a warning on the front cover regarding 'explicit'photographs !! It is an excellent book to have.

> There is even a warning on the front cover regarding 'explicit'photographs !!

I have to smile at that!  :-)

About the most shocking photograph is of dogs mating.   You only have to have a day out at the zoo, and are very likely to see animals doing what animals do.  I know I have.

There are photos of whelpings, and you can watch women give birth on the TV nowadays.

The reason I chuckle, is that, day after day, after day people are subject to things far more explicit.  When you see warnings nowadays, I am surprised how many people are not in the least fazed, and wonder what the warning is about.  I think that it goes to show that it wouldn't be shocking today.  People buying this sort of book are most probably thinking of having a litter.  And they are going to see their own bitch in a tie.
