Usually when I breed I calculate the due date as 2 calendar months from the date of mating and this has worked well. This time however I am still not sure exactly when my pups are due. 2 calendar months from mating is 1st March. Today in other words. But as Feb has less days, 63 days is 5th March. Another complication is that I did progesterone testing this time so know exactly when the pups were conceived. Ovulation was the evening of the 12th day and mating morning of day 15.
I have been told two different dates when to calculate the pregnancy from, either 63 days from ovulation which would be tomorrow 2nd March or 63 days from actual conception which would be 5th March. I need to know the exact due date so I can tell when if we go over and need to intervene.I thought with having only one mating and progesterone testing I would be less confused about when the pups are due. Not more.
i always would go by ovulation if you know the day ,63 days is an avarage for dates when not done ovulation ...dedending on breed some will go from 56 days some go over even from ovulation. so i would say tomorrow is d-day :) good lookx

I've found that 63 days from the date of the first mating is pretty reliable - or
use this chart.
I guess the 5th is the most likely day then. Will not start worrying for a few more days then.

When progesterone testing if you know you have mated in fertile period I use 60 days from mating. The calendars working on 63 days allow for bitch to be in standing heat at point of ovulation with Conseption some 2-3 days later.
K
thanks. As she was mated on the day the eggs should have been ready that would be tomorrow. I had a feeling it was less than 63 days from conception to birth than from ovulation to birth.

I also count from day of first mating, but how long depends on the breed. I count day 56 as the first possible day for my toy breed and day 58 for my large breed. It's very rare for any of mine to go 63 days. Think it's only happened once. Had pups born yesterday and it was day 58 from first mating. Labour started day 57 but pups were born when it had become day 58.
Did you progesterone test? I had one mating 3 days after ovulation and the scan indicated that the eggs had been fertilised straight away hence trying to find out whether I should count 63 days from the mating or less.
Congratulations on your pups by the way. How many did you have and what sexes?

No I have never tested and have never had a failed mating -and now when I've said that what's the betting the next one will fail LOL. I just go on the behaviour of both bitch and dog. We've got 3 pups (would have been four but first was stillborn), two bitches and a dog so very pleased. :)
I had to test as the stud was miles away and over the Christmas holidays only had the chance of one mating so wanted to make sure we got it right. I don't usually. Congrats on your puppies. Glad you got what you wanted.
Back to watching my little girl snooze this afternoon. Nothing looks imminent at the moment.

Good luck!!
ive only progestrone tested once! she had them on day 63 from 1 mateing :) the other have gone early from 5days to 1 day :)
well this morning we had a little digging and some panting and apparent discomfort, but now everything seems to have ground to a halt. She is just lying in the whelping box snoozing.
the calm before the storm ...good luck :)

She is getting warmed up, this could go on for days as past posts on here will testify to when folk have worried about premature whelping.
my goodness Rhodach my girl for 1 :) and went on to have then on the day of 2nd mating Lol
you could well be right. We have had more spells of digging, and snoozing but no puppies. (except in the dreams I have been having while snoozing along side her) It might be a long night.
In my Breed we usually say 2 months & 2 days. We only had one mating this time, on 21st November & sure enough, pups arrived on 23rd January :) Good luck...

The pups are here

Congratulations!
