Sometimes you really appreciate having the right breed. I am not well at the moment and it is a joy to have three dogs at home who are so little work, they always are. Thank god for my lazy couch potato greyhounds. One is 9.5, one 3 and one 10 months today. I can't imagine sitting at home sick with a spaniel or a collie LOL :)

I know what you mean my Whippies are very much the same & if your ill they like nothing better then snuggling up beside you in bed...
- By cracar [gb] Date 26.02.13 15:25 UTC
Excuse me, but that's a very 'breedist' remark!!lol
I have had plenty of 'pyjama days' with my 3 spaniels and GSD pup.  I think it's about keeping your dog content and training to be calm in the house.  You can do this with any breed including spaniels!! ;)

hehe sorry, i'm sure it is true. :)

You're forgiven.  Must be you 'sick' addled brain making you anti-collie/spaniel.  :)

:) Depending on the illness, it is sometimes a really good thing having a dog that demands to go out - a blast of fresh air can work wonders :) My ex-neighbour always managed to walk her dog after her chemo sessions - it made her feel much better and she had the pleasure, often, of meeting me ;) ;)

I can promise you Cavaliers make great 'sickbed' dogs - as long as you wanted hot water bottles all over you, that is! :-p

My dachsies like nothing more than getting tucked up with me when I am having an off day, they have to be under the duvet as I can't bear having it pinned down.

hehe I used to have spaniels when I was a kid and they were always hyper, but so was I then so it worked perfectly!! :)

You don't want a young Cairn then!!!

My Dalmatians don't care whether you are sick or not they still need a good walk or your day will be just filled with trying to stop them getting up to no good lol...... oh I remember back to my lovely Whippet girl who was sooooo lazy :-) she was great when you had flu, she would curl up next to you for the whole day!! Wouldn't be without my spotty dogs though.
Paula xx

Staffies make excellent companions when your ill, as long as you don't mind them taking up all the bed and duvet, and probably breaking wind violently lol.

Completely understand what you mean. I have one dog who is perfect for that.My poodle will have a cuddle but its very much on his terms and he soon gets bored and wanders off to something else. My lurcher would literally lay still and let you cuddle him for hours upon hours.
Dog cuddling and a little stroll round the block if you are not up to much at the mo are great medicines x

My labs are ok as they tend to amuse themselves with various toys and playing and rolling about and when they get too zoomie get shoved outside for a five minute madness session.

Otherwise they are quite happy to snooze all day in various positions and places and do try and do Labrador triple deckers when given the chance but a no go when my back in playing up !

I've got 2 Vizslas - one would snuggle for ever under the covers & almost never want to go out for a walk - the other one would like 3 walks a day (or maybe just out doing something all day).   So possibly choose not only your breed wisely - but also the individual dog.

I simply can't believe how different mine are in terms of personality . . .

Having just been poorly ,trying to sleep in bed, with collies demanding walks, cuddle, balls thrown, etc, staggering out with them feeling like death so they can run some energy off,I take your point!THey can be nice and calm, but one day is usually their limit!

My boy is an active gundog breed, but is quite happy to have the odd duvet day. As long as he's with me he doesn't care what we're doing :) However, I know others of the breed that wouldn't be quite so happy with the arrangement!

ginjaninja, I have 2 Weims and it's exactly the same. The boy would be happy if he didn't have to lift a paw as long as he's snuggly enough, but the girl...different story. Total opposites.

Wonder if it's a boy/girl thing?

They both go out every day but when we were all struck down with 'flu for the best part of 2 weeks they did get used to not going out after a couple of days. I was very surprised by this - it was something of a relief!

Not a sex thing - both mine are girls - but they couldn't be more different.  One has gone back into her sleeping bag - having briefly left it for breakfast & will happily snooze there until it's time for bed.  The other one is sitting behind me on the chair - or chewing something - or wanting a walk - or a tug - or food.  Even after a serious walk she sleeps maybe an hour and then is ready to go again.

The first one hates the cold & wet and would make a terrible working dog - the second would happily work all day in all weathers.

I didn't choose either dog - but next time I get a pup I will do.  I know more about dogs now & know more about what I want.   The first one was my first dog and is calm & polite - the second is a rescue & is as full-on as any dog I know.  Just as well I got them in this order . . .

My plan with both is to do working trials - but actually the rescue is temperamentally better suited to it & will enjoy it more.  The first one would like to live with a sedentary pensioner in an overheated house . . .

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Know exactly what you mean.  I don't have such a breed.  I do have the OH but still, there have been times I thought my head would explode with a migraine and I still took the dog out.  Not if I was at the barf bucket stage but up till then I had a nearby field where I would sit on an old car fender well and feebly throw the ball.

Thankfully, at age 5, Oban is now able to miss a day of exercise.  I will certainly notice he has increased energy the next day when we finally get out again and I will plan where we go accordingly, but it's nice to cocoon in bed with him on a sick head/stomach day.

Ahhh to have a dog who understands duvet days.  Unfortunately mine doesn't.  Training in the house - freeshaping, hiding smelly treats etc. does help but it doesn't stop her bouncing on my head.

The joys of a young setter.
