Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How low is low??!!

Hi all,

We're about to temporarily foster a greyhound and I've been told she must have a low protein dry diet. I've checked my current dry food which is 19% protein - this sounds pretty high to me but - how low is low!

Could you all have a look at your dry food protein levels and I'll try and figure out who's got the lowest!!! Alternatively, you could suggest a low protein brand name if you're a clever dick - but that would spoil all the fun...

:D

Very roughly anything around 21 and below is low. High goes up to 28/29 or so. If you compare it to tins then yes, it does sound high but you are not then comparing like with like. As an example, A tin of Pedigree Light contains 8% protein and 81% moisture (Water by any other name!) Just try the maths of working out what the protein level would be if you removed 81% of the volume!!!!!!

Best wishes, John

19% protein is fine, its a usual level for resting Greyhounds or none racers.

Hi Lady G,

Would it really spoil your fun if I even suggest a specific food :D I used to use Wafcol Greyhound food for my pack(why pay VAT if you don't have to?) They do a red bag which is the racing formula and a blue bag, which, if I remember correctly is their maintenance one and is the one you would need I think for your foster dog.

You may have to order it but I was quite happy with this as a complete feed (although I added things to it :) )

yes the blue bag is the maintainance meal around 20% protien if i remember.red mills also do a similar feed named leader as do most suppliers of greyhound completes.i agree there is no need to pay the VAT man :-)

Well there's a stroke of luck! I don't pay VAT on my dog food either so I shall continue to use what I have.

Greyhound hasn't arrived yet as the rescue charity seem to be taking a long time to get their act together - but no doubt when she does I shall have posts-a-plenty for you all - shrieking for help!
