Just arranged to do some occasional walking of a greyhound for the Cinnamon Trust, anything in particular with this breed I need to know? She'd be on lead, but are they the sort of dog where I just walk her along pavements on a short lead, or can she go on an extending lead if I find some fields. Don't want to find she's suddenly charged off at top speed and either wrenched her neck or pulled the lead out of my hand!

Personally I would be using a harness rather than a collar if I were attaching a flexi, bit safer just in case they zip to the end.  Although I don't imagine even a flexi would give tonnes of room for a greyhound to build up speed.

She may well have a harness, I've not met her yet. But I'll keep that in mind, thanks. :-)

I'd ask the owner what they do and stick with their rules. Youncant use an extending lead on a neck collar and wouldnt put one on a harnass either. The dog will just think it can run off only to find it cant stretch its legs as it wants to, ie at 70mph!!Chances are the greyhound will be happy for simply a good walk

Yes, that's what I thought - don't want her to think she can gallop off at full tilt! Perhaps if we get on, I can then enquire for a safe field or something in the area so she can have a gallop occasionally. The Goldie I walk for the CT is an old boy and ambles along very happily on an extending lead, so I feel he is getting as much freedom to sniff and trot along as he wants, without risking him not coming back. I don't know much about hounds though! :-)

An extendable lead is great for those kind of dogs. I use one in certain places we go to that require dogs to be on leads but are nice enough for fred to stretch his legs and stop to sniff what he wants and enjoy a bit of 'controlled freedom'. Sadly, they are no good for greyhounds whippets lurchers etc with fragile necks and a tendancy to want to dash off :-)
