This summer is a very momentous one for me ........although I cannot quite understand how it happens, this is the summer that I attain the age of 70!!!!

I'm not having a party ....if I have one, I know I won't be able to talk to everyone - so I'm planning on a month of celebrations instead - different parties for different people, if you see what I mean.  And it's the celebration with my sisters that I'm puzzling over at the moment.    I'm thinking that we shall "do" afternoon tea at one of the "posh" London hotels.   There will be 5 of us - my 3 sisters & sister in law - and if anyone here has done this, I'd appreciate the feedback!

Thank you ! x

Exciting year ahead and hope the DH or the CD girls are a scheduled party in your plans ;-)

I honk it would be a great idea have you been watching Mr Selfridge on ITV as you should all dress up in the same fashion in the decade you were born suitable for ladies who lunch ! Lol

I do this every year in January with my three sisters.  We have done them all! :)  My personal favourite is The Goring.  It is smaller and a little more intimate and the sandwiches have gorgeous fillings, a little more imaginative that the standard smoked salmon, cucumber etc.
It's a lovely building, wonderfully old fashioned without being stuffy.  We generally sit on the terrace overlooking, what I believe, if the largest hotel garden in London.  Apparently they have a replica beach out there somewhere where you can sip cocktails :) although always going in winter we have never investigated that.
Tip :  Book the latest time for afternoon tea and if you are still sitting there when the cocktail hour strikes the passing canapes will be your bonus :)

I've just been watching the latest episode and only meant the way they lunched rather than the fashion era of the programme RFLOL !!

I havent done it but I did watch the prgramme 'inside claridges' and in one programme it featured a family who were having afternoon tea as a treat for a birthday or retirement. It looked really lovely.there was champagne, pots of tea, sandwichs and scones. Wherever you end up going I'm sure it will be lovely. Am actually a tad jealous :-)

My daughter bought us afternoon tea at Claridges for a Christmas gift. It was superb, a great dainty spread, replenished whenever we wanted. The staff were very attentive but discreet, we tried lots of different blends of tea. The pianist plays uietly in the background. For us it was a real treat, we have been to many other hotels but this for us was the best. I understand the Landmark is meant to be good.

Whatever you do- enjoy!!

I have to say thats a brilliant idea. I am 50 this year and plan something similar small "do's" in response to your afternoon tea's (an idea I may steal) I have to say we went about 20 years ago to The Goring for my Great Aunt's 100th birthday afternoon tea. And it was simply superb..................she wanted to see Buckingham Palace and a boat trip down the Thames. The afternoon tea was a "surprise" and a brilliant day we went in June, the gardens were lovely.

My sister took me on Weds to Claridges for afternoon tea for my 40th present, wow it was fantastic.  The hotel was beautiful, staff very friendly and the food and tea were lovely.  I had such a wonderful time and think I may make it a yearly event.   They have details on their website but it was £40 each with the tip on top was £45.

I have done similar. i wanted to arrange something myself rather than someone doing what they thought i might like. so i organised a sunday lunch at a very nice country hotel  for the very imediate family that i wanted there. and i also made separate dates to be special with friends. i feel to get all the friends i know together would be difficult and they are all so diff too. some doggy some not. some posher than others ect. so it meant i had a lot of nice do's to go to. i hope you have a great time. enjoy!

Actually, I'm planning on a whole month of celebrations ....I know only too well that if I have one big party, then I'll finish up talking to no-one!  So, I'll be having one in the US of A (just a week early) with Sarah & family + american friends, then when I come home, there will be another hooley with the Isle of Man/Derby/Colchester crew ...then afternoon tea with sisters....then another "do" here on the island for local friends, then there's my train ladies do, other old friends/workmates - not to mention my contingent from CD etc....;-)........ I shall be in contact!

And of course, although he's not here to celebrate it with me - there's my 50th Wedding anniversary at the end of the month ....shall have to commenorate that too ........

He will be there to celebrate it with you, because he is always with you - although I never knew him I would imagine he may choose to opt out of the girls afternoon tea natter.......whatdaya think?

Actually Kazz, I'm thinking of taking a bottle of bubbly (or two) up to the green cemetery where we left him (see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2404841)  and having a little party there - it's a lovely spot, overlooking the Strood - so depending upon tides, you either see the seabirds feeding or boats bobbing around.

His walnut tree is growing nicely now, and there are snowdrops and violets growing there too - and of course, we scattered Thor's ashes there too!

Now thats a plan......
