Ok, so my bitch has not actually been confirmed as pregnant yet but I have been thinking about names for the puppies. Checking some names I like on the KC name checker has told me that some of the words I wanted are Affixes already so I can't have them. I am rather disappointed as I have been planning these names for ages. :(
Just looking for opinions. I might be able to get round the issue by changing the spellings or dropping letters but I am not entirely sure I want to do that.
No the actual words but examples are
Brite or Bryte instead of Bright
Feelin' instead of feeling
Obviously the names would sound pretty much the same but would just look different when printed. I personally prefer the correct spellings of words so am looking for other peoples opinions when they see names with different spellings. Do people understand why it might have been done? or should I just abandon the whole thing and go for names I can spell how I want.

Also as I like my names to link together if the KC reject some am I allowed to ask that they then don't register the whole litter until I have amended the names. I don't want to be in the situation where half the litter has one theme and then I have to have something else for the rest as I can't find any more names that fit with the first one.

Or am I taking this all much too seriously?

The KC normally register the names that are accepted and wait to hear back from you for the ones that are rejected.

Also I've had names rejected that sound like other breeders affix even when spelt differently,  do you have your own affix?

yes my affix has just been approved. name checker still won't let me have the names I want even with the affix.

Your only option is to have enough names in your theme to allow for rejections.  I very rarely have names rejected, but I use foreign (Polish) words for my names.

Even if the name only sounds like an affix the KC will reject it. (know from experience).

Like yourself I use a common theme for each litter, but always have enough alternatives for the theme to work even if some are rejected.

Although the name checker is excellent the one I had rejected due to affix clash did not show as an issue when using this, it was only after submission that it was declined.

I fully understand there reasoning as I would not like something close to my affix being used.

Having a theme is lovely; but ensure you always have some reserves.....  good luck with your naming choices....

I use one word that is common in each pup in a litter then offer first and second choice for each pup, Dream Catcher was rejected but Catching Dreams was OK.

Blythe is rejected but Blyth is OK

Some breeders will put Light in the names of all their red dogs and Dark in their black dogs, years down the line they will know by name what colour the dog was.

I think dream catcher is a siberian husky affix as my girl's name was rejected so I had to have catcher of dreams. Personally I am like you I do not like corrupted spelling. I will never have another litter but it doesn't stop me thinking of pedigree names ;)

Yes, I just had this with 2 of my pups.
As I had 9, I only chose 1 name per pup(always done 2 in previous litters)..made it much easier, even with the 2 rethinks.

I know that feeling, and sometimes just can't see a reason for the rejection.  I had really, really banked on one name for a boy that I was keeping.  I wanted xxxxxx (my affix)  Smarty Pants.  It really suited this boy, summed him up in personality.  So I was gutted that it wasn't accepted.  I don't know anyone with the affix Smarty Pants!

Yet I named a boy from a later litter with a name that suited, and the following year in the BRS I saw it accepted to someone with a different affix, but the same breed!  So I don't understand how it is all decided.

It took us 3 litters(9 years) to get one name & actually would really have suited the 2nd pup best.

Not sure how long ago you would have tried Smarty Pants but My affix Smarty has just been accepted(4 weeks ago)

It was back in 2006, so some time ago!

It is a puzzle, I had a bitch that was called Affix Elisa and a few years later the breeder of my bitch named another bitch the same name and it was accepted so although my bitch had my affix attached both bitches were in the ring together with the same name.

As by having yoru affix added to the name made them unique, as one was Affix Elisa affix, and the younger one just Affix Elisa.

Mind you I don't think I'd ever re-use a name when nameing pups.

That's interesting JeanSW as when I had my litter in Aug 2011, one of the owners wanted xxxx (my affix) Smarty Pants and that was also rejected. In the end we went for xxxxxxx Xtra Smart (as the stud dog is Forever Magic Xrated).

That is true but I am nevertheless surprised that the KC accepted it as they seem to turn down names for far less a reason, after all having two bitches with the same name in the ring at the same time could cause confusion and in this case it was not just the name by the Affix as well.

Quite agree I did find it confusing.

They will actually allow an exact same name in a breed after 10 years as long as the previous one hasn't won into the stud book.

See our breed has gone to Band A, only class placing that qualifies is 1st in Open.

5 years ago I applied for myaffix Cherokee, and it was rejected. 2 years ago another breeder SAME breed registered a dog as theiraffix Cherokee. I think sometimes it's pot luck and the views of who happens to sit there and decide on the day.

It's possible that between you applying for the affix and the other breeder using the word that the holder of the original affix had allowed it to lapse and so the word became available again.

Yes that's a good point, never thought of that.
