Hello everybody,
I am the proud owner of a 5 month old beagle puppy. I would appreciate all help from anyone regarding on how I can train my beagle to be a respectable well behaved pet. He is not used for hunting, and he was given to me as a present so I know only the bare necessities about the breed. I live in Greece, where unfortunatelly help is not so readilly available as in other countries. for the moment Sirius has been spoiled rotten and will not stop bitting us, digging up the garden and "talking" back whenever I try to correct him....

please help!!!

If he starts bitting simply remove him from the room and completely ignore him. let him cool of for a while then let him back after 5 mins. he will soon get the message that if he doesnt bite he will get lots of attention. if he doesnt stop bitting just keep putting him out it will eventually sink in. As for digging 'pass', my garden is like a bomb site but dogs will dig. just try ignoring him when he talks back to you and give him plenty praise when he stops. Hope this helps, there will be other people on im sure that has a lot more experiance and advice than i have to offer. Good luck.
David.

Hi

I too have a six month old Beagle and have had similar problems to yourself. On the biting I concur with the previous answer, try not to give any reaction positive or negative as this will definitely be seen as attention ! Ignore them and trust me it will go away. Lots of nice chewy things will help the Beagle take out his chewing angst which I can assure you will continue for a little while.

Good luck

It might be a good idea to buy some books on dog training and behaviour, to help yourself as it were. I expect most companies will send overseas, I highly recommend www.crosskeysbooks.com (it might be co.uk) as they have a great selection for pet owners.

It would be a great idea to get hold of "The Perfect Puppy" by Gwen Bailey as it is aimed at the everyday pet owner and it straightforward and tells you how to avoid problems as well as how to deal with any that do crop up :)

Thanks everyone....have tried the site you suggested but found the book on amazon. i've ordered it and it will arrive in about a week. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to train him. Do you think he is too young to start basic obedience training?

I'm sure I heard someone say that obedience training should start from the moment you get a puppy home, in most cases I would imagine that to be about 8 weeks old or so..I know I had to start immediately with my new pup , we got him on 31st December, if I hadn't started then ,he would be ruling the House by now lol. Hope you enjoy lots of happy years with your new puppy and Good luck!
