We have 4 pups. Last born at 12.15am. My girl is still leaking gunk 8 hours later. Is this normal?

I'd say no; a red discharge is normal for several weeks after delivery, but not green/black. I'd contact the vet immediately.

I'd certainly expect the green discharge in the first 24 - 48 hours JG, it then becomes blood colured to brown. 

The OP is saying 8 HOURS after whelping.

What was the situation with the 2 born sleeping? Did their placenta come away with them ?

Brainless, none of my bitches have ever had a green or black discharge, which is why I'd be concerned.

I would take her in for an oxytocin injection to clear her out as it sounds like there is some placenta left behind which may become infected.

We've had a hell of a night. 1st pup born, perfectley forrmed but dead. We tried everything :( 2nd pup, I'm sorry, it's too graphic for a public forum. 3rd pup feet first & took ages, but alive :) 4th pup arrived with no membrane...hubby delivered that one as I'd gone for a quick pee. He was rubbing the puppy & didn't see a placenta. Pups 5 & 6 again born with no membrane & only 1 placenta delivered. Just phoned vet....we're booking in for Oxytocin jab at 10am. Just incase there's a placenta still in there or a dead pup. My girl has been panting, but I don't think she has the strength to expell anythiing that may be in there. By the way...all 6 pups....boys!

I have had the very dark green discharge (can look almost black) on the vet bed for the first day or so, but with this eventful whelping and retained membranes/placentas a vet visit is wise.

Green discharge is from the placental sites.

Just checked again...definately green. She's eating & drinking well & looking after her pups, but my gut feeling tells me there's something left in there. How quickly will the Oxytocin work?

Quite quickly, but ti will often upset a settled bitch into thinking she is whelping again. 

You may have restlessness, digging etc, so need to watch very carefully to ensure she doesn't trample/bury the pups, and settles enough to nurse.

I have had placentas delivered the next day without any Oxy, but with the labour she had a vet check may be best.

Well this is my 4th litter in 14 years & I could easily say never again...certainly not with this girl anyway. I still can't come to terms with the state of the 2nd pup :'( & I didn't get my longed for girl puppy!

Husband & son off to vets...I'm puppy minding. As they left, she passed a load of gunk on the hall floor..it was picked up in 1 peice, didn't have membrane, so guessing not a placenta?

I'm so sorry to hear this Rockstar, I hope you can move on soon and enjoy your four babies. I lost two puppies in my first litter, and both were in a frightening state, it does unsettle you quite deeply but it makes you treasure the ones that made it so much more. Hope your girl is well and good and that the jab can eradicate any worry in your mind. xxx

Could have been a placenta.  But in 30 years of being around dogs having pups sadly I only have ever seen green/black discharge when a pup has died inside.  I have to say that i'm another that has never found it to be the norm to see this colour after birth.

Green discharge is normal during and after birth though.  We are only talking the day of whelping here, not days or weeks later.

I've had a live puppy born 8 hours after the supposed last puppy, and placentas delivered next day, with no issues.

Have to admit my most recent whelpings have had very little discharge yet had stillborn and decaying pups as part of the whelping.

In this litter I had two less than half size pups that were in varying stages of mummification/decomposition within very tough sacs.  I assume too late to have been absorbed before delivery.  Could well have gone unnoticed if a bitch had whelped them unsupervised for a minute.

The oxytocin will remove any debris,also bring down milk quicker, pieces of placenta don't always have membrane attached but unlike blood clots can't be squished between your fingers, she will get cramps but only the same as when the pups feed

I know how you feel about the sight of dead pups, my last much waited for litter after 4 phantoms were all born dead, first pup was perfect and I just couldn't revive her, she had been alive over night, the other 2 pups were partly decomposed, I still see those pups and the dam was too old to try again, it is very sad but concentrate on those pups that survived they grow up too quickly.

got to give what ever they want for afew days :)....mine havnt ate much after having pups 1 girl didnt eat well at all till the pups had gone at 8weeks :( we never mated her again ....just wondered when your girl was mated?? what day was she on and did you progesrone test?? x

No testing & she was day 20 x

ive been told if a bitch mates at the end of eggs ripon males are more likely ...so we will see our girl mated early so will see soon x

Oh I see, thought is was something that had been researched.

The Shettles method is used by couples to try and sway the sex of their child.  Basically it is said that the female sperm are slower swimmers but last a lot longer and the male sperm are sprinters that burn out much quicker.  So by timing intercourse (by knowing when you might ovulate) you may get the sex you want. It's not conclusive though. 

didnt know that i read this re grayhond raceing dogs they used this and mostly got the sex they wanted x

I've heard that too, but not sure if it has much scientific basis, alas.

im sure there was a tread on here along time ago?? re this im sure i read there was some scientific resurch donebut i cant find it now :(.

I know of breeders who put pants on the boys as the boy sperms don't like the extra heat and they get predominantly bitch pups from varying males.

Knowing my luck I'd kill all the sperm and get no pups.

you know when i read that thats what poped into my head :(...i want all girls from my up and coming litter i have more to pick from then :)x
