Just wanted to share something with CDers who *understand*...my family don't speak dogshow...

After 5 minutes in the breed (well, ok, 5 and a half years really but it feels like 5 minutes) I have finally taken the plunge and put my dogs into my own kennel name that I got last April. It took me nearly a year to think of a name, and then I was told I couldn't have it (sound familiar?). The good folk at the KC had misspelt it too, so I had another hard think and finally came up with something that suits the purpose. So it was a very proud day for me last week when I finally registered them (I wanted to have some small successes at least in the ring, and the puppy and her uncle have both done well lately), and the really exciting bit is coming up--my first entries with the dogs in their new name. You can see why no human being in my family could possibly be interested but hope CDers will indulge me :-)...thanks everyone

It's lovely when you see your kennel name in print  in a catalogue for the first time.

Thanks roscoebabe...it's better than Christmas!

As a breeder I always feel a bit dissapointed that the names I carefully choose (explain the meaning and pronounciation) that even the owners I keep most in touch with can't even get/remember my affix/kennel name, let alone the pups name.
- By Sassinak [gb] Date 22.01.13 13:26 UTC
One of my pups won a national photographic competition.
Imagine my disappointment to find he is mentioned under his 'pet' name and his KC name and my affix is nowhere to be seen :(

> and his KC name and my affix is nowhere to be seen :-(

but that is part/half of his KC name????
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 22.01.13 13:27 UTC
I know just how you feel - I've had an affix for a bit, but of my 2 litters, one was just boys and at that time I couldn't keep a boy, and the other was my mismarked girl I fell in love with. Still waiting for something that I can put in that 'bred by exhibitor' class! I'm still a bit miffed that the KC wouldn't accept my first kennel name, but it was ok with an 'ex' on the name to make it slightly different. I wonder if there's a way of finding out if the original version even becomes acceptable, though of course then I'd have to pay to change the dogs into the new kennel name....

Congrats on your progress re affix.

The first time I saw my affix in print on a really good critique on a bitch pup I bred in my first litter I thought my heart would burst, I went round telling anyone who would listen, unfortunately she wasn't shown much after that but has produced pups for the ring.

so what is it then?and how did you decide on it? sorry I am incurably nosey!
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 22.01.13 14:07 UTC
newyork, I chose Laithmoor--the laithe being a type of vernacular building we see a fair bit of round here, essentially a cow barn with grain storage with a T shape floorplan, and when incorporated with a dwelling it becomes a laithe house. Moors we have in abundance, and they are two things I love about this area. So all my dogs are now "for Laithmoor."

Oh I like that. I see some affixes and I wonder why people chose them, but that is nice.

Congratulations :-) Glad told us what it was or I was going to ask. I love names be they pet or registered in fact I am weird enough to have to like the way the pet name "looks" in my mind if that makes sense.

Love knowing the reason behind the choice and the meaning if any. When I got my kitten in August he was called Timothy in memory of a cat my Granny had when I was a child. I unexpectedly had his brother and spent ages thinking of a name for him, he ended up as Piper because Piper is the genus for pepper plants and they come in black and white and of course their is the Pied Piper although that wasn't black and white .

Sorry got a bit carried away there

Wishing you much luck with the new affix.

Can't understand why the rest of the family aren't excited!  (Take that back.)  I so CAN!

What would we do without our friends on CD?

Just wait til youve got Laithmoor in front of the dogs name.... that will be really exciting. :-)

Just wait til youve got Laithmoor in front of the dogs name

and that was my next thought :-), tooolz! But my puppy bitch is only 9 months old so we will have a bit of a long wait and that's if the rest of her health tests come in clear/with acceptable hip scores, etc., and if we can find a dog for her. But she is doing nicely so far--Puppy Group 3 and 4, a JW point...and that's in her pre-season state. Now she is looking much more filled out and I'm really looking forward to getting her out again next month. Come to think of it, I'm looking forward to getting out myself--going through her season with three entire dogs has been an education but I feel like we've earned a little rosette in advanced logistics moving them for meals, going out for a wee etc....:-). Apart from a couple of days when it all went off the scale they have really been pretty good with each other.

What would we do without our friends on CD?

I'd have just probably popped, flown round the room in a massive hiss of excitement and then dropped on the floor like a dead party balloon.

Thanks everyone:-) :-) :-)!

Happy days...I remember it (fairly) well! :-)

I hate to admit it, tooolz, but I have already picked names if we ever have a litter...
- By tooolz Date 23.01.13 06:59 UTC
Never too soon to get a little book full of names :-)

Tips: don't waste good ones on pups that won't be shown or bred from.
Keep them snappy, remember if the dog becomes a big winner or a successful stud, the name will be bandied about a lot, it needs to be iconic.
May sound obvious but check and check again for correct spelling.Hugely embarrassing to make a silly mistake which cannot be changed.....eg Charlie's Angle......Guilt Edged ( no pun intended, owner had no clue)

Picking names can be great fun :-)

I'd already be making shortlists of potential studs, researching their backgrounds.  Have done this as soon as i have kept a bitch pup, and you can narrow things down as she develops and you know what traits you wish to improve, set in her offspring.

Look at the sires that are producing the results you hope for from various bitch lines, especially any that are similar to hers.

If your aim is to keep bitches then check the studs with good bitch lines, whose mothers you admire.

A general good rule of thumb is to use an older stud with proven production record on a young/maiden bitch, that way you have at least the assurance of one side of the pedigree producing good results/no issues.

With a proven brood whose offspring have turned out well you can risk using a young or unknown stud.

It's a good policy if there are any late onset issues in a breed

It's so much fun. :)

Great name, congratulations :-)

I know exactly how you feel! I applied for my kennel name just before Christmas, and it was granted a couple of weeks ago (our first choice). I was bursting with excitement over it, but nobody I told seemed to share my excitement!
I have been in my breed for 7 years now and don't even have a bitch, so no immediate breeding plans! But I wanted a name for my website ;)

LOL Brainless...I have one in mind.  His mother was a great bitch and the reason I came into this breed; he produces very consistent quality offspring (157 from 25 litters to date) who do well in the ring and although the COI is a shade over the breed average it is nowhere near as high as some I see. So I will keep looking and dreaming :-)
- By furriefriends Date 23.01.13 14:39 UTC
how lovely you must be so proud :)

Just to say some of us puppy buyers do remeber the kennel affix :) I have forgotten how many times I have told people where he comes form and we now have a fb group for those puppy owners. :)
