Moose has finally finished her 2nd heat- She would not allow Junior to even try mounting her - could be
because I would tell him no and remove him- but she herself told him off- and he's a determined old boy 13 yrs.
Then I also figured she told him off cause she lives with him- have heard dogs not allowing due to living together and no separation.
I would give him a place to lay down and relax cause her smell was putting him in overdrive so to speak. We would kennel
him off in another part of the room so he could settle & relax didn't want him getting to worked up, cause he's not a young pup any more.
I'm glad things are getting back to normal and have settled again until the next one. Glad to say we got through it and No accidents!

I am planning on having Moose spayed 2 months after her 3rd cycle do you think her growth plates will be closed by then?
She turned 1 yr Oct 2 and she is a Great Dane/ Red Nose Pit- she's about 27 " at the shoulder and last weighed in at 87 pounds.
She goes for her adult shots in Feb so will be getting her weighed again, and prob her last set of shots unless Titer tests say other wise.
Of course if her growth plates are not closed I told hubby we will def be waiting out till they are done- so am hoping after her 3rd cycle
which I am thinking should be maybe June or July.

Why do you want to spay her?  Personally, I don't spay mine until they are 6/7 years - unless there are medical reasons for it.

Is your 13yo male entire?  If not, there's even less reason...

Spaying her so I have no worries about pyro and also don't want to deal with heats her entire life- so for my convenience not hers.
You take on a lot more & more worries not being spayed. We want to be able to go places and not worry about a heat ect. But at least
I am waiting till she is fully mature before having her done- that's what are goal is :-)

There are plenty of practical reasons that you take into account when deciding when to spay and I think you are right to do so.

Re the growth plates etc ... Because she has giant breed behind her, I would be inclined to wait until at least 2 yrs before spaying, perhaps even a bit longer.

So maybe 2 more heats left to go threw instead of one :-( That's ok if that's the case, cause actually thinking of wanting to spay her
in the winter/ well cooler weather instead of the summer. Then would prob be doing March-April if she comes into heat the same as she did this time. Will also
be asking the vet in February about her growth plates.

Also, see if you can find somewhere that offers keyhole spay? Makes a big difference to big girls :-)

Have never heard of that- will ask my vet.If they don't I'll still be going to her cause I trust her- been with her for
almost 18 yrs :-)
