was generally looking around google for all things dog. Found this as a description of exercising your flat coat

"This active dog needs a daily walk or jog to be on its best behavior. Be sure the dog is made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human."  I must have a chat to Brooke about this !

btw the same paragraph was quoted for other breeds too

I guess it's fair to assume that the author had no canine knowledge.

You can read so much baloney can't you?  (And wasn't baloney polite of me!)  :-)

yep the thing that got me is its a site that pops up quite regularly if you want info on different breeds and this sentance was used for all the ones I looked at.
baloney was very restrained lol

Amazing that all guide dogs haven't caused major problems by leading the way!! LOL.

Wow yes - they must be very 'dominant' dogs, as they have so much control over the owner! ;)

When we're walking through long wet grass, two of my dogs will leave it to me to create a path.  I'm obviously to be trusted in path-finding skills, such that they abdicate complete responsibility for navigation and BOTH walk into the back of my knees if I stop.

Not entirely relevant to the merits of training to walk to heel but never fails to amuse me - particularly when I get another shove as if to hurry me along a bit.  Little sod boxes :)

obviously written by a non dog/non flatcoat owner! i have owned flatcoats since 1981. i have NEVER had a problem with any of them. they and i work well together. if i want them to walk close off/on lead they do so. if i feel that the situation is fine then loose lead walking is fine. all dogs need mental physical stimulation. trouble is nowadays lots of folk get dogs as they arent in a possition to have a baby. WRONG the commitment to own a dog should be taken seriously. you cant get up in the morning, go out and leave a dog in the house most of the day. some without even getting a walk. then hey ho when they get back the dog is sooo pleased to see them as he/she hasnt been sitting reading/watching tv, and then owner is tired, cant be bothered going out with the dog, walking in the dark/rain/snow wasnt considered when they thought getting a pup was a good idea. i could go on but you will get my drift! lol
