Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / cat allergic to puppy that my friend sold???
- By kenzi [gb] Date 11.01.13 20:44 UTC
I wasnt sure which section to post this but my friend is very upset and i said i would try and find out information for her.She has been a breeder for many years and has never heard of this before and i must admit i think it sounds  a bit strange. My friend has recently recieved a call to say a puppy she recently sold is to be rehomed because the cat is allergic to the dog ( non moulting breed). The lady told her the cat started to wheeze etc when the dog arrived then did the same when they took him to the vets and the vet says he is allergic to the puppy, now im no expert but surely this is utter rubbish? If it is she wouldve rather she was told the real reason. The puppy went to a show home so she is hoping to get the puppy back.

I don't know about cats but we had a dog that was allergic to rabbits when I was a child. He used to come out in spots like excema if he had contact with any. My parents insisted on rehoming my pet rabbits rather than the dog. He used to come out in spots when walked in places where thee were wild rabbits too

I'm not sure if your friend is right to believe this or not.   At the end of the day, assuming she is a reputable person (you say she's bred for many years), then her main concern is to get the pup back.  You say it's only recently.  I would offer full refund - but then I would offer anything to ensure I got my own dogs back, rather than them be advertised on any old notice board, and sold to any old home.

She has just called to say pup being returned this weekend. She is relieved but still finds it strange that this little girl is being sent back because of the cat is allergic, anyway at least she is getting her back.

Not sure what is strange? if the cat is allergic and that is not impossible what are they supposed to do? presumably they had the cat already and it will be a much loved pet. Much better to return the dog to her breeder than to try to rehome a cat who may be allergic to dogs.

I guess anything is possible an allergy is an allergy, we never know what may cause it, but must admit, I've never yet heard (until today) of a cat being allergic to a dog.

Found this explanation on eHow:

Any cat can suffer from or develop allergies, but if your feline is displaying an allergic reaction specifically around dogs, she is most likely allergic to something on the dogs rather than the dogs themselves. According to Pet Supplies "Plus," the two leading causes of allergic reactions in cats are flea bites and pollen--both of which could be a result of your dog going outdoors and bringing allergens inside to your indoor cat.

Shame that further investigation wasn't done rather than just say the cat is allergic to the dog. People trust in their vets, so the owner can not be blamed I guess if this is what the vet said, or if indeed the cat may have another problem nothing to do with the pup just a coincidence when it came?

Regardless the most important thing was to get the pup back whatever the reason and so glad they wanted to return the pup to breeder. :-)

Weird vet -IF it was reported back correctly, which I think it probably was not. Bet you anything the cat was stressed by the arrival of a new pup therefore had an outbreak of cat flu. Makes perfect sense. Once a cat has had cat flu (which an awful lot will have had), it lies dormant and flares up again at times of stress.

The puppy is back with my friend but another question, the lady agreed to wait til the puppy was sold but should she get a full refund regardless of the age of the pup.She didnt get her til she was 11 weeks even though she couldve had her at 9 weeks, she was asked to hold on to her,she is now 14 weeks. What are your views on this? My friend does not think she will get the same price that she sold her for although very relieved she has the pup back with her.

What does your friend's contract state?

I would have thought that the puppy will be harder to sell at this age and the price she can charge may well be less than for a younger pup. It seems to vary between breeds though. It would seem fair to give the lady the price that the puppy now commands, possibly less expenses incurred between now and when the pup is sold.

My hubby no's someone who bred husky's and he had a husky that was allergic to people.
I don't find it that odd- don't see why an animal can not be allergic to another animal.
Def not something you would hear about to often.
