Topic Dog Boards / Health / Help! Springer bad again I need help
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 10.01.13 08:27 UTC
Hello you may have seen my thread poorly springer and she has had two days of being able to get up and walk a little, no incontinence , eating drinking ok. Very wobbly on back legs and can't stand for too long and back feet tuck under when she walks, left worse. X ray showed narrowing of L7 -S1.

Tis morning she had poo'd in her bad as cant get up at all, even with help won't then walk. Got her outside using a sling and she poo'd a bit more but no real effort put she just stood and it came out. Have given her tablets PLT and tramodol in some food which ate no problem.
I don't know what to do, vets of course first thing but they will want me to decide on MRI scan or PTS maybe?? She nearly 12 and had arthritis in elbows quite bad. Will she survive an op, if it operable?

Thought she was doing ok and it would take time for her to repair if it slipped disc type thing. Vet didn't think there was a bone tumour.

I know none of you can decide for me but just needed to write stuff down. Husband here and he doesn't want her put through uneccessary pulling and poking. It sad in our house this morning.

I'm so sorry. :-( I can't offer any advice but I share your anguish. I lost one of mine to hindleg paralysis three years ago but he had no sensation in his hindquarters and tail at all. If your girl can still get about even a bit then there's hope. Rest seems to be vitally important in helping the healing process, and nerve damage is notoriously slow to mend. My other old boy has just come off 2 months of high dose painkillers (Rimadyl and Tramadol) for sciatica and he can now walk slowly for about 500 yards instead of screaming when he moved and we thought we'd have to lose him too; these things seem to take forever. Wishing you and her good luck, and fingers crossed that today is just a blip.

Today she can't get up, she has never messed her bed before and she just can't get up. Waiting for vet to ring.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 10.01.13 08:40 UTC
It could be that she's just stiff today and that complete rest will ease it; I hope that's all it is. I'll be thinking of you.

No-one can tell you what to do.  This has to be your decision, I'm very sorry to say.
Just wanted to tell you that when mine have no quality of life any longer, that is when I make the choice.  So long as the tail is wagging, they can toilet and still want their tea, I fight with every breath for them.

Off to specialist southern counties veterinary specialist in ringwood. At least hopefully we may get some idea of what it might be.

So sorry there has been such a bad relapse, only you can make that final decision, better a day too early than an hour too late.

Well down the route of CT scan and possible surgery! The things I said I wouldn't do because of her age and existing arthritis BUT its so hard when they say they can fix your dog and give a 90% success rate of her being back to normal, and she's lying on the floor on all her blankets looking in pain.

I did feel a bit pressured to do it in the sense that he made it sound all so easy, but without a scan we can never know exactly what the problem is so I agreed to that. Plus the only other option was to PTS or bring her home and let her lay there. She couldn't stand and have a wee which is probably making her more uncomfy.

Waiting now for them to ring and give results of scan.

I think you're right going for the scan , whatever the outcome at least you will know for sure.
I am keeping everything crossed for you here. It is so so hard to make a decision when you are faced with a problem like this . My mam had to have her 11 year old spinone x pts because of a similar problem but her vet thought nothing more could be done.

well done for taking this route. most of us would do anything for our dear pets. i pray for a good outcome. at the end of the day you know you are doing everythig possible. X

She had big spinal tumour I between shoulder blades and secondary's in lungs, would never have known she was so poorly.
Didn't let her come round from anaesthetic but have been to see her and given big cuddle, she just felt like Tilly and was still warm so it was like she was asleep.
So sad and upset but at the same time I am ok as she is now out of pain.

What a very sad outcome, but you did everything you could for her including giving her sleep. Sometimes we just cannot save them.

- By ChinaBlue [gb] Date 11.01.13 10:07 UTC
So sorry. You made all the right choices for her every step of the way. If it had have been something operable it was a good risk to take, even if you had lost her under anaesthetic the only other choice was to lose her anyway, that's how I look at that situation. As it was, you revealed the true nature of the problem and were able to let her go without any further distress or suffering.
I came across this quotation on a decorative vinyl decal that you can apply to a wall, which I must buy, and which says it all:

It came to me that every time I lose a dog, they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.
