My HPDeskjet 950C model won't print. An orange light keeps flashing. My son says the ink cartridge must be empty but it wasn't that long ago I replaced it and I haven't done a lot of printing.
My friends epson printer show a little inkwell on screen that indicates when the cartridge is low. Can I get that with the HP, how do I know if its the cartridge??

HP dont do that Lorna. Yours is newer than mine, (895cix) so I dont know but there is no low ink warning on mine. The first you know is when it stops printing.

I have a 950c too, and wonder if it is the ink cartridge you put in. I had the orange flasher when I used a compatible cartridge. It printed fine to start with and then refused to print and flashed orange. I asked at a computer shop (not PC World) and was told that the cartridge could have been refilled several times already and that the contact copper bits (sorry - don't know proper name) on the cartridge were probably worn and no longer being recognised by the printer. I had to buy a proper HP cartridge and bin the old one.
I have to admit to refilling my cartridges as well, but only refill 3 times before installing a brand new one and haven't had the same problem as with the compatible. It also works out cheaper than having to bin a half used compatible.
Hope this is of some help.

I have a 959c and it has an ink level in the tool box. Right click open toolbox.
Dont know if this will help. Is it a new printer?. Ours was a real sh#t to install.

I have an HP dj 640C which is a pain in the <insert own word>. It has taken to printing 1/3 to 1/2 of a page and then doing the flashing light thing. No amount of button-pushing helps.
I downloaded a new driver for it last night, it took over an hour and a half. I got the message about a successful installation, but did it make any difference? Did it hell!
Considering that new cartridges for it cost more than the printer cost new (it was on offer), I think its next overhaul will be to that local place which is known euphemistically as the "Community Facility". Yep, the SKIP.
As far as I'm concerned, anything which will not do what it was designed to do is a waste of space.
HP = Hopelessly Pathetic.
Now to call my little Mac expert friend, to fix and re-istall my Epson.

I have an HP 1315 series and it is wonderful ;) It told me (by a flashing icon) that the black ink was low ..so Stephen took the cartridge out , shook it and put it back ..that was 4 months ago and it is still going ;)

I tell everyone to shake their cartridges :p cos you get at least another 500 copies from it before changing it. :)

Cheers everyone, I'm about to have a good shake - back later :) :) :)
