Topic Dog Boards / General / lurcher coat
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 07.01.13 11:51 UTC
Have recently adopted a lurcher and being new to the breed I have a few questions RE coats.
- What do i look for? SOme have wax, some are wool
- Will he have separate ones for wet weather and another for cold weather?
- Is it cold enough at the mo for him to be wearing one?
-Have seen lurcher snoods?? Are these really neccessary?

If anyone can recommend any that would be fab and any pointers about what to look for and buy would be really appreciated. Cheers.

Really depends on what the coat is like.

For example he may have a weather proof rough coat if there is terrier or one of the rough coated sighthounds in his make up.

If there is Collie blood he may have enough coat from the double coated Collie ancestry.

What I am saying is unless he has a fine whippet or greyhound type coat, or elderly, he may not need a coat at all, not for warmth anyway.

Sorry, should have added, he has quite a thin smooth coat but we were told he will need to wear a coat in cold weather.

Yes, most whippets, greyhounds and smooth lurchers are wearing coats now, a fleece coat is perfect for this weather, fleece pjs for when it's really cold and you'll probably find he won't want to go out in the wet, but if you insist then yes a waterproof coat too would be most welcome :-)

I bought one of these for a friends whippet at Christmas and it's fabulous, really thick and good quality and covers her up completely, this would be for very cold days.

These are great waterproof coats.

If you search online you will come up with lots of lurcher/greyhound/whippet coats, don't buy any normal dog shape ones because they're just not deep enough in the chest and are always too baggy at the waist.

My old lurcher loved these fleece jumpers, available in a variety of understated colours. She hated getting her jumper off, and would stand and stare at it on the radiator, willing it to jump on her :-)

I would suggest that you take a look at the "Equafleece" coats, they are soft and warm and generous in depth too, they also keep the water out as well as allowing the body to breath. Pictures of different breeds "modeling" their coats can be seen too. :)

They don't seem to do a specific greyhound shaped coat and standard dog coats just don't fit sighthounds properly, although they do ask for chest and waist measurements so may be ok. Personally I'd rather stick with a site that is dedicated to sighthounds.

I know a lady from another site who does made to measure dog coats in a variety of types, she makes a lot for whippets and greyhounds.  It's Blue Monster Dogwear on Facebook - hope it is ok for me to put this on here as it is not something I have any involvement in but I have seen quite a bit of her work and she is pretty good

They are experienced in doing sighthound coats - I've been buying from Equafleece for years for my sighthoundies, lurchers and Deerhound.

Thank you very much for the advice and pointing me in the right direction. I love some of the alternative colour/printed coats but my chap probably wouldnt see the funny side and would refuse to walk him if he had a tiger print coat on =)
Thanks again

My lurcher loves his equafleece and hotterdog jumpers, they fit so well he can happily use agility equipment while wearing one. Snoods might not be essential but they are pretty cool. Wish we could post pictures so you could see Vic in his custom knitted bee hat, its awesome.

ETA: Vic in his hat :)

Chillydogs do a great long & lean version of their Great White North coat.  I love it because it's fleecy all round the front, waterproof over the back and stays put even if they leap around & roll.  It's not that cheap, but I have had one for 4 years and it's as good as new.
