Hello, does anyone compete in rally-o obedience trials?

I think LucyDogs may compete in this field - hopefully she will be along and see your post

Here I am! :-D I have competed in the APDT Rally-O, now KC, but there aren't many trials in my area and I found it rather too fussy and formal, too close to the formal obedience, too many ways to get disqualified in a round. What area are you in? I compete and run regular Talking Dogs rally trials (talkingdogsrally.co.uk) which are around Suffolk / Norfolk / Cambs, and also down in Hampshire, Kent and Sussex. I also compete in PDRO (janetwest-rallytraining.co.uk) which is in east Suffolk and Essex. It's pretty easy to compete in more than one style of rally, there are a few differences but TD and PDRO are pretty similar, and much more relaxed and fun than KC rally! We have a TD trial coming up in Norfolk on 3rd February and a PDRO trial in Suffolk on 24th February, if you're in this area at all and want to come and see what it's all about!

Hi Lucydogs,

I am in the Essex, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Suffolk area.

I have just started doing some training with my dogs for it and am really enjoying it!

I didn't realise there were different types of rally though!

From the information I have found (not a great deal) it says on qualification of a level the dog receives letters after their name. Is this just for the KC trials? What other differences are there?

I'll have a look at those websites now :)

Thanks! :)

Sounds like TD is mostly in your area, possibly some PDRO. You get letters after the dog's name for TD rally too, so my Ellie is actually ChR1 before the name for her L1 championship and TDR2 after the name for her L2 title. I've not done the KC rally but it's pretty much like APDT was I think, you have to have precise 90 degree turns and 180 about turns, sit on recall like formal obedience, and you get disqualified for even an appearance of luring which seems pretty harsh to me. TD rally has smooth curved turns and about turns, and also has the sharp pivots as separate signs. Trickiest thing I find with TD is they don't have a sit at present on recall, the dog just comes to stand in front and then is sent to heel. PDRO has the wider turns again, but does have a sit on recall. And you lose marks on the dog jumping up, which is where we have trouble! Easy enough to remember when you're used to the signs. :-)
