Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bigger puppies?

Hello all.

My bitch was scanned tonight, day 41 (six weeks), and the scanner showed me the screen and the pups were huge! She couldn't see more than three because they were so large, but last time she was scanned at six weeks the puppies were small enough to see several on the screen, and much clearer. She was mated on day eleven last time and day eleven this time, same stud dog, so I'm wondering if she's ovulated earlier this time and so taken from the mating sooner? Is that why the puppies are larger this time?

Or maybe there are significantly fewer puppies?

I hadn't thought of that; last time she had six, two were still born though. Should I be concerned if there are just three large puppies about whelping them by herself?

my friends pups have just been born and her girl was massive 2nd litter she had 5 pups which where big infact the 1st pup was dead thru mum pushing for so long he was stuck ....anyway maybe just more room for them to grow so might be less so bigger ??!! :)

I would think less pups[1/2 as many as last time] so more nutrition to go round hence they are bigger, only time will tell if they are too big for her to pass.

When I had a bitch with a smaller litter scanned, the puppies looked the same size on the screen as with the large litter, but there were bigger gaps between them.

Was she scanned at 41 days last time ? My puppies are bigger in this litter (bitches 2nd )

I think it was day 36 or 37 last time? So only a few days between. Just struck me as a bit odd, but I did honestly think that she might have ovulated earlier this time and thus taken quicker? Is that possible?
Felt little kicks today, magic.

You felt puppy movement on Day 42? Wow! We're on day 45, but don't expect to feel anything till at least day 50. (Medium breed, bitch's 1st litter)

I am very lucky, she's a small breed and quite round right now, and clipped quite short all over her belly and back so I have plenty of opportunity to catch a kick here and there. ;)

Thank you, not too long now. Good luck with yours too, exciting when you have someone due around the same time, makes it go faster.

I know this has nothing to do with the thread but I have just got to say waggamama that I have had a little look on your website (you are only up the road from me!) and saw Eggnog (fantastic name!) and just wanted to say wow!!! what a stunner. This is not a breed I know anything about but this pup really stood out to me and I had to mention it. I hope you have just as much success with this litter :) :)

Oh Labs what a lovely thing to say!! Thank you! She is very funny, and a lot of fun to show, always having a good time and being a bit naughty. ;)
We should meet for a walk sometime, drop me a PM where you are and we can arrange something. xx
